Hi just a quick post to see if anyone has had the same problem before.

I have a 1986 90 with a disco 200tdi conversion, has always run like a dream, never missed a beat, the only problem ive had with it are the normal electrical issues, wipers, lights etc etc..

when i pulled out the dash i found a mass of mangled wires with twisted toether wires and scotch locks... definetly not a fan..

so i opted to fitting a new harness, found one by luck, exactly what i wanted, main harness with blade fuses etc.. and only £40, Bargin..

So i pulled out the old and fitted the new one in on saturday, its nearly all in, just head lights etc to go, but i thought i would try and start it while the dash was still off, then engine spun up nicely but no start.. I put the ignition on and checked the fuel solenoid, all was fine with the correct voltage there, i stuck a multi meter on it and it seems to be losing its voltage when cranking then has it back when cranking is stopped, I have checked various pins on the ignition switch but none seem to have voltage when cranking (apart from the main live and the cranking wire obviously.. )

is this likely to be a coicidence and a faulty ignition switch or possible something diferent? like a different type of ignition switch?
I put a live to the soleniod and she fired up 1st time,

has anyone fitted a blade fuse harness? if so did you have to replace the ignition switch aswel?

Thanks in advance for any responses, i'll be on it tonight, will let you know of any updates.

Thanks

Browny!

No problem, think ive found the issue(s)

it seems there is no feed from the ignition barrel when cranking other than to the stater solinoid.

Although this was confusing at first because it worked a couple of hours before i then found that some kind of butcher had been at most of the engnie loom wires, where i found quite a few twisted together wires, including the fuel solinoid which had been cut into and a permement live fed into it. so this is why it statred beford, basically the solinoid always had a live.. shocking.

Obviously someone in the past had a problem feeding the solinoid, so instead of loooking for the problem just tapped a live into the wire. anyway, i bypassed the ignitionput the brown live straight to the big white aux with, all relays clicked on, and i had live to the solinoid, i put a quick live down the cranking with and she fired up straight away :)

put all new front lights in last night, and a new wiper motor & cable, so just the dash to 'slip' back together tonight and she'll be sweet, with shiney new blade fuses that dont fall out, and i can be sure that there is not one twisted together wire on my 90.. bloody hate people that cant do jobs right!!

Thanks for the reply..

just had a thought, obviously it must have had an ignition live otherwise it wouldnt have turned off the engnie, so must be a faulty ignition barrel after all.. oh well..

Anyone got a 200tdi ignition barrel??

:)

i like threads where you answer your own problems.

well when nobody can give any imput what choice do you have, it's not a drama, dont get peoples experiences without asking.. :)

Might have saved some time and money if somone had a similar problem before so def worth asking..
