Hello
Drove to UK from southwest France last weekend, Defender 110 (2009), started making a slight screeching sound when accelerating - particularly light acceleration in higher gears.
Mechanic just had a drive and listen, he said it needs new/repair transfer box, and this is a massive job costing a couple of grand or more. He didn't want to do it himself, and said I'd never find anyone specialist enough to do it this week - I'm driving back to southwest France on Monday. He said take a chance and drive home, then find someone out there to do the work.
Anyone had to replace/repair transfer box, costs?
Cheers

second hand tbox from £250, c £700 for refurbished.

never done one but I'm sure it wouldn't cost £2k inc box!?

I would check to see if screech is not coming from auxiliary drive belt and pulleys before forking out.

Hope not ... He reckoned £2.5k for a new transfer box, presumably that includes fitting it! I get some pretty serious vibration through the steering wheel at about 60-65mph, could this be related?

Whereabouts are you in the UK? Maybe someone might either help checking props first, and even changing UJ's, or point out a trusted local Landrover specialist. General car mechanics mostly hardly touch landrovers, mainly I think, 'cos they're scared of them! ;)

I'm in Brighton, but heading back to France on Monday ... I'm not sure what to make of this mechanic, he's very negative about defenders and advised me not to get one, he says he worked on them in the past for the army - long time ago I think. Soon as he got in it, today, he said something was wrong with the clutch as its too heavy, it is heavy, then diagnosed the screeching after hearing it for a second ... Don't know if he knows his stuff or not, I sure don't, but will consult hayes manual as see if I can do something about these ujs. Main concern is getting back to France without incident - don't really want a (serious) break down with a 3 & 6 year old!

Apologies, don't know anyone in that area who could help you out. But I would try and get them done before driving back

Okay - garage wise - gumtree 4x4 in ditchling may be able to help, they have a mini breakers on site aswell.

Not sure how else I can help?

I can, but am working all the rest of the week, and have the kids Saturday as my other half is at work, might be able to swap stuff at work and get an earlier finish one day so can be free in the evening, let me speak to my boss today. Other option could be Sunday but that’s a bit close to the wire.

Also a good general mechanic I have used a few times is the old forge garage in sayers common.

Parts wise there is CPA parts in burgess hill who can get most stuff next day if they haven’t got it in stock.
