Here we go
From your picture that angle iron was welded to the flat sheet before it was galvanized. So there is no galvanizing between the 2 surfaces. I'll bet that all there trailer are made that way ie all welded/assembled before galvanizing so there will be place between 2 surfaces w/o any zinc. You'll just have to live with it

Nothing is welded after galvanising. Galvanising is a finishing process.
It's hard to say from pictures, but I'd r coin that has been a bad weld that has cracked after, or maybe during, the galv process. It simply shouldn't be like that. There's going to be nothing they can do to put it right properly and so just tell them you want a new trailer replacement. Spraying it with oil is not going to affect what they can do with that so no need to worry. That's a poor weld, it's going to get worse and have an increasingly detrimental affect in the integrity of the trailer. It needs to be replaced. It's NOT your fault!

Thank you everyone! They are giving me a replacement, this time I will spend a decent amount of time looking over it before taking delivery... The brakes didn’t hardly work either so when stopping suddenly would shunt my landy forward accompanied by a Big Bang, awful really for nearly 5k! But I will give them the benefit of the doubt this once and see if the next one fits the bill if not then I’ll be very upset... The chap mentioned about touching the rust up but then quickly said but you will always no it’s there, no way I’m doing that!

Not the greatest of welding , certainly not done by a professionally trained welder.

+1. I want to type something witty here, but it's just crap welding... and it'll still be crap welding after any joke.... Ho hum.

(.... perhaps he was a "pro"... but forgot his specs that day :confused::confused: .... both specs and a refresher course are in order  )

@Discodevon - my first thought on seeing your picture was regarding the welding - It's carp - and not fit for purpose IMHO - and clearly was like that at the point of sale - therefore refund IMHO.

I said to the chap mine must have been built on a Friday afternoon at 3.00pm or something haha!
Bunch of legends though you lot definitely made me pursue it more than I probably would have

Do you think I should have got a refund and not a replacement then?

I would always go for a refund and make them sweat a bit - you may have been able to negotiate a discount for your trouble, and in fact you might still be able to get a bit of "luck money" out of them for your inconvenience .....

One problem with that, being a gardener and everything is growing like mad atm so need the trailer more than the refund

Fair enough. :) I'd tell them that anorl - Don't get me wrong, it's great that they have sorted it out, and replaced the trailer - fair play to them for that .... but I'd still want a bit of a sweetener - even if it's only a bottle of wine or six for the hassle....:)

Hopefully I don’t have to wait too long for the new one, that’s a good point though, perhaps I should mention a discount as a good will gesture for shoddy workmanship

Is it a large retailer? It might seem a hard line, but I think Disco1BFG is right. That's a 5K trailer! You have your own gardening business, do they know that? If I was the salesman I would would have made it my business to find out what you were using the trailer for, just in case! The amount of positive business publicity to be had from giving you a few bottles of merlot or a £100 voucher for the shop would be difficult to calculate. As would be the potential business loss from doing nothing and word getting out from you throughout your business circles. If I sold you that trailer I wouldn't need to be asked in order to give you a good will gesture. They may well get the replacement from the manufacturer at a discount price because of the embarrassment they have had dealing with the customer - you! It won't do you any harm, when chasing up the new delivery, to mention not being too happy because of the impact on your business. You don't need to be an @rse about it. :)

Got to wait 4 weeks to get my new one ☹️ I may call the company direct and ask for some extras for the inconvenience caused, what do you think?

Phone them and say you need it for your business, and cannot be responsible for any damage while you are waiting.
Ask if there’s anything they can do.

See what they say.

How do you mean call the company directly? Do you mean bypassing the salesman and going to the manager. Or, goint o head office. Or, contacting the manufacturer rather than retailer?

You're a free man so you can do what you want :) It might be worth calling the manufacturer and asking them where you might be able to source the same trailer at another retailer near you. Or, you could ask them if there really is a 4 week delay as you could do with it ASAP as you use a trailer daily for your business (Have you sold the old one? I'd be tempted to give the impression I had and so were trailer less) This would arm you with a lot of information to detail with your current retailer. If somewhere else can get you one quicker, you could call them up and say "listen I know you're trying to get me one, but I get get one by X date so need a refund instead as I desperately need it for work - I'm losing a lot of business". They'll then have to give you a refund or miraculously get a new one a lot quicker and maybe discounted. Worth a try

Once the trailer, or anything else that's going to get galvanised, is completely finished it is indeed dipped in to an acid bath and left for some time. This is to remove any traces of rust prior to dipping in the molten zinc. The molten zinc needs a clean, steel surface to adhere to. It won't adhere to rust. Following the galvanising process an item should be shiny, silvery zinc all over with no signs of rust.
