Hi all. Just registered as after having used the forum loads over the years to get useful info, I now think I should give something back if I can! I've had a 2000my D2 TD5 XS since new (now with 225k miles on the clock) which I maintain myself and my girlfriend has just bought a 2003my D2 TD5 G4 which I get to look after too- it replaces her D1 300TDi Safari so my welder will get a bit of a break now.

Welcome both of you and your cars. You must have taken bloody good care of that old girl to get to that milage and still be going strong.

Cheers. They're good old bits of kit if you look after them. I replaced the original clutch at 220k only because the spigot bush was getting so noisy. The clutch would have done another year or three. It's still got the original battery and exhaust- now over 17 years old. The 300Tdi has 265k miles on it and still in daily use (for another week or so anyway). I've done miles of welding on it in all the usual places and it drives beautifully- a lovely solid feel to it. Will be a shame to see it go but my girlfriend saw this bright yellow D2 G4 and that was it. The chassis could have been made of cheese but it was a yellow G4 and nothing else mattered! (It's actually a bloody good motor but I can't admit that to her, can I).

Blimey that's amazing, I reckon there should be a prize of some sort for that dedication.Youre right about your other half, you really can't blame her for wanting the new in,don't know many who'd turn that down. But no don't admit it whatever you do! I have a T REG disco 2 td5 es had it 6 years and love it to bits only done 142,000 so not properly run in yet.

Wow- yours is very low mileage for it's age. How's it been on reliability? Presumably you've been through all the usual D2 probs. I have to say that my 2000 TD5 which I've kept in good mechanical shape isn't any where near as refined as the 2003 G4 we've just bought. The G4 is noticeably smoother and quieter to drive, and it pulls a bit better too which puzzles me slightly as they're both supposed to be the same power and torque. I dismissed the "facelift" when it first came out as a bit of a cosmetic sales ploy but I now concede that the 700 odd minor improvements actually add up to a noticeably better vehicle. I'm now thinking about changing mine for a facelift model. It won't be yellow though!

Since I've had it,it's had a new air compressor ,new in tank pump,p/ s pump,I did the three amigos modification before they got chance to move in,Last year put all new discs and pads on and redid the watts linkage and all the steering joints, they weren't worn out completely but she'd lost a bit of sharpness on handling. She was my daily driver every day until recently when I had to pack up work.Never has actually stopped or failed to get me home just went a bit silly when the pump failed.Ive used to tow a trailer with tractor on ,which is why I bought her in the first place , and at maximum weight she pulls well and handles spot on.Also changed the trans fluid and filter just to be safe last year.Give her new oil and filters every 3000miles.Chassis is good everywhere ,slight rust showed at the rear rails couple of years back so cut that out and plated with3mm steel. All in all ,and touch wood I couldn't be more pleased

While I'm on here, I'm having some grief with the speedlock on the 2003 D2 TD5 we've just bought. It's currently active so the doors lock as soon as you get to a few mph. I've got a Hawkeye and I can access the speedlock function and turn it off but the change won't save so the speedlock remains active. Not a huge problem but it's bugging me a bit. Anybody got any thoughts?

All sounds like the normal D2 stuff. Just picking up on the trans stuff- what's your views on the auto box? I've only ever had manuals but most of the late model ones for sale now are auto. Would appreciate view/experiences on that.

Sounds to me like you are not saving it on the save page.

Cheers

Welcome aboard :)

Good on you for maintaining a D2 to an obviously high standard. Shame on you for getting rid of a D1 :p :D - make sure it goes to a good home - they are only going up in value now;)

We have two D1's due to us being Luddites:confused: .

Ah, thanks- new to this so how do I do that?

Not sure, I just remember someone having the same problem back last summer. Turned out they were not saving it on the hawkeye. Have a look for a save button on one of the pages.

Cheers

I know- I actually loved keeping that old bus going- proper engineering. But times move on. Good for you sticking with the proper Landys.

Yeah- spent a while messing around with it today but no sign of a save option. I used the Hawkeye to reprogram the SLABS from air to coils OK but the speedlock doesn't want to play.

For some reason I think it is the last of the pages that you can change option on things like speedlock. but been a lot of beer since I read it.

Had all sorts of autos in the past including several million kilometers in auto ,/ semi auto trucks over 40 years , I would say that properly looked after,Inc preventive maintenance on xyz switch and so on it's a first class box, Don't know how they respond to remapping etc cos everything on my old girl is as original, still got the egr and everything on,if I'd wanted a porche I would've bought one, lol,It change exactly when it's supposed to according to the numbers ,the sport mode worked well the 3 times I've bothered to try it! As you can guess I'm not a speed merchant but I give her the Welly and get the turbo singing. At full weight towing I use manual to set off and then at about 54/6 let her go into d and lock up.Only changed the fluid as thought it was a little discoloured and didn't want to chance buggering it.

Good to know- thanks. I've had autos before but not Landrover ones so interested in how well they work and are they generally reliable. Might go and test drive one soon (D2).

I tended to be too gentle on mine to start with, not giving her much throttle and sort of waiting for a change, should have known better but soon as I got in tune with her we were away.Quiye good on diesel too, don't chase mpg but on a roads with some dual carriageway at about 70ish the average is about 27/29 on a decent run with cruise on and clear traffic about 31)2 over about 150 miles ,towings a different game altogether, then between 12/15 but I still think that's bloody good at full weight with the aerodynamics of a brick

Will you 3 get a room!!! Its called the Discovery room.
Welcome, i hope you have brought cake with you?
