Mine, with 315k km on the clock, starts in the first second if being cool. If the car was driven before, it can take about 2-3 seconds of cranking before it starts with a black puff of smoke :) Had a complete FIP overhaul about 15k km ago. Still have to change leak off pipes.
As for pipes, they are standard 3.2mm internal diameter fuel pipes. You can use the 3.0mm also. Just order 1m.

Do you get bubbles in the clear line from fuel filter to FIP?

If your battery is not too good and the cranking speed is low, that can cause starting problems. You always have to wait for the glowplug light to go out before cranking unless the engine is hot. For leak off pipes just buy a length of silicone rubber tube 3.0 or 3.2 I.D. Check for fuel leaks round the fuel filter and change it if it hasn't been done recently.

Hi datatek, Cheers, i'll have a look for the pipe, I always leave it until the glow plugs go out and the injector light has gone off no matter what, but its the same problem. Also brand new battery and cranks over at good speed.

Any pictures of leak off pipe location, or someone changing them?

Thanks

Leak off pipes are under the plastic cover on top of the engine. First undo the three 5mm inbus bolts on the serpentine belt cover and take it off, then undo the one 5mm inbus bolt on the remaining plastic cover and pry it out towards you.
Underneath you'll see injectors, which are linked to each other with black braided hoses - leak off pipes. Look for any fuel signs on and around injectors.

My Oil Burning '99 DSE, when cold....after the Glow Plug light goes out she starts first turn of the key, no hesitation, when I say first turn, literally as soon as it is turned she's off....

When shes warm, 3-4 seconds of crank time then off she goes, I always wait for the little Orange Engine Light to go off before I try to start her up when she's warm....don't know why, she just starts better when I wait the 3 seconds or so before turning her over, maybe it is psychological, but it seems she starts better once I wait!!!!

Right im back...

In my attempt to fix the starting issue I have so far, changed the ITP, and changed the leak off pipes, (there is no air in the clear pipe). It has not sorted my problem yet, I have to allow for glow plug light, then crank for 5 seconds, turn off, allow for glow plug light again and it starts first crank.

Once running if I turn it off, then within a minute try starting it again, allowing for glow plug light then it starts perfectly first turn of the key. If I leave it any longer I have to go through the whole starting process again. (It makes no difference if I have been running the car for 5 minutes or 4 hours, it still has the same starting pattern, even if the engine seems hot after running, I can walk away for 5 minutes and it wont start properly)

This leads me to think that the glow plugs need replacing, what does everyone else think? Also can someone advise me on the best glow plugs brand for the job and which type..

Hopefully I can solve this problem soon
Many thanks

You may have 2 problems. Cold start may well be glowplugs, test with a voltmeter that you are getting 12 volts at the glow plugs. For new ones, Delphi, Bosch, Beru, NGK or OEM.
Hot start problem could be the engine temp sensor or the well known hot start problem. Glowplugs are irrelevant when the engine is hot.
