Hi folks - this is my first time in the LandyZone, and although being a Land Rover owner for a few years I haven't taken the best care of it. So, with limited knowledge in hand I am about to depart on the grand adventure of tinkering with several items and need your advice. Some of this may sound really ignorant, but I am an architect, not a mechanic, so bear with me as I try to learn:

Vehicle: Land Rover Discovery
Year: 1997
Engine: 300TDi 2.5 Liter (or Litre for those across the pond - LOL)

1) Where in the world is the radiator pet cock? I have been digging around the bottom of the radiator for hours and can't find it.
2) I know the turbo charger is going bad - is it worth buying a new one over a rebuilt? (I am planning on keeping the vehicle for at least 10 more years and want to repair as much as possible in order to keep it on the road and to learn)
3) What would you consider to be a decent winch to purchase?
4) What are the best repair manuals/parts manuals you would recommend? (with plenty of step by step pictures for boneheads like me)

thanks all!

john

get yourself a Haynes manual an as for the winch ad say warn 8274 or 9.5 ti .. an fook knows wot a pet cock is what are you trying to do to the radiator ???

If the turbo is on its way out and you can afford it i'd get a new one as you've said plan to keep the car for 10 years or more, all depends on your budget really,

Thanks all. I googled about the pet cock (or draincock). It appears that vehicles not made in the U.S. do not have them. I drained the radiator by pulling off the bottom hose, as suggested. And thanks for the answers on the repair manuals, winch and the purchase of the new turbo vice the rebuilt. All good advice!

Another question to you Landy Wizards - I will be buying a new turbo charger as recommended cause I want to keep this beast a while. I see that cleaning the cyclone breather and the hoses from it to the turbo and from the turbo to the inter-cooler is relatively easy. However, its cleaning the inter-cooler with the effort? Should this be done professionally or can it be accomplished by a newbie? If I do it, what do you recommend I clean it with?

OK Folks another question. My roof top manual windows are beginning to leak into the headliner. Thanks to nicedayforit and your provision of the manual I was able to discern these windows have a drain pipe(s). I would hate to take out the entire headliner to unplug these pipes (At least I think they are plugged since the car has been sitting under a pine tree for a long time). I checked all the gasketing around and it is in real good shape, so I am thinking it is the pipes are clogged. Does anyone know where these pipes lead to? I might be able to attach a lower pressure air hose to blow them out from the end.

As always, I appreciate your experience and advice.
