I'm picking up my first Land Rover later today, a 56 plate TD5 90 Hardtop. It's actually the 'Black LE' edition so looks pretty good as standard and comes with heated leather seats, air-con, heated screens, boost wheels etc etc. The main purpose of the vehicle is my daily commute plus visiting site (I work in construction) and the very occasional trip off-road.

I don't want to make too many changes but was considering wheels (I particularly like the look of the Mach5 style wheel in black :D ) and perhaps a chip. So my questions:

1. Any recommendations on wheels - I like the Mach5 wheel, where is a good place to get these? Is there anything similar on the market? What wheel / tyre size combo should I be looking at (I don't want to change the gearing)?

2. Chips - is chipping effective on the TD5? Any recommendation?

3. Any other bits and bobs I should be looking at?

Thanks guys.

As for wheels, thats a personal choice, but I do like the Mach 5's. Loads of places sell similar wheels so have a shop around.

As for chipping, well...

chipping a Td5 can give a huge increase in performance, if your looking for something more than a slight increase you would want to fit a larger intercooler and the chip together. This would allow the engine cooler denser air to make better use of the available power.

Take a look at

Twisted Performance - Diesel Land Rover & Range Rover Tuning And Styling Products - Defender, Discovery, Freelander, Range Rover Sport, TD4, TD5, TD6, TDV6, TDi and Td5 Alive Ltd - Land Rover Td5 Specialists, Diagnostics, and Custom Performance Tuning

standard td5 put's out about 125hp, properley tuned you can be looking at around the 200 mark.

As said above but take a look at Zu rims as they look identicle to the mach 5's but they are much easier to balance and come pre-finished where the mach5's need powdercoating. The Zu rims are also much cheaper. Hope that helps.

Forgot to mention,

if you don't want to spend a huge amount and just get better everyday driveability blocking off the EGR is a good start to better performance.

Td5 Alive sell the blanking plate for around £50. Doesn't give much for extra performance, just much more flexibility, smoother and more responsive, less changing gear etc. etc.

If you keep the original wheels and tyres, they could do you for your "very occasional" trip off road. As you seem to want to improve performance why not add something more performance orientated.

You can still fit a set of all terrains if you only want the one pair to do you off road as well.

It's endless the amount of stuff you can do to personalize your Landy.

Post a pick on here when you get yours, and we can offer more ideas.

Theres loadsa different folk doin uprades and stuff, but I am told the simplest is a remap on Autologic or similar, around 400 quid.
Some let yo try it out, then if ya dunt like it they reset it to standard.
A while ago JE were doing these at half price.

i would check it out with LR though if ya still got warranty.

First of all, it's not just mine, it's shared with my dad. It's more family.

Secondly it's bought from a a small ind. dealer in Sussex, not much trade, therefore low prices. I was bought with 55000 , bit of a beaten up working hard top, dodgy gearbox, scruffy inside.

Paid some with all the money I'd saved since 12, working in holidays etc. My dad paid the rest, cause he uses it! dog's, moving stuff around and the likes.

Literally just got home with it about half an hour ago....delays on the train on the way up due to flooding...blah, blah. But now at least I've managed to asses it over the 250 mile trip home. Quite impressed although a little bit more power may be useful as I do around 40 miles each day on the motorway...generally very happy.

Is the (relative) fuel economy going to suffer if it's chipped? I'll take a look at the outlets mentioned. Yes, it does have another 2 years of warranty remaining.

Zu wheels, I'll take a look in the morning.

Thanks guys.

word of advice:

don't be afraid to hold on to gears and building up the revs when accelerating in a Td5, they love it really.

i would recommend ya chip it, remove the EGR valve completely, an upgrade yer exhaust system, go down to one silencer. the turbo sort of evens out the firing pulses and is a bit of a sound damper. the better it breathes, the better it goes. when i chipped mine, she became more economical. the guys who chipped it said they tend to be slightly overfueled from factory, and along with the extra performance u get, less throttle is needed. she running like a dream now.

Gave it a wash earlier and took a few pics, this is what it looks like as standard.

Thanks :)

Am very happy with it. A little unsure on the wheels, before I picked it up I was certain that a set of Mach5 (or similar) wheels in black was going to be my first purchase, but maybe more black would be overkill??

Then again, nahhh, they should look gr8! :D
