Some of you may be aware that as of 1st Oct 2014 the paper tax discs will be obsolete and its all computerised! Simples but I quite like paper tax disc collection in my vehicle history folder! All those mind bending colours!! However, beware that you will no longer be able to advertise a vehicle for sale as 'Taxed', asfrom 1st Oct 2014 the Tax becomes non-transferable!!! Swines, as you want to get the most out of your current tax disc before you sell it so you are not out of pocket!! Yet, should you fail to sell your car before your tax runs out then you will either have to declare it SORN and lose money on a car sale and ultimatley the prospective driver will not be able to test drive it or; you fork out 6 months tax (Hefty in our landy world) only for you to sell it a day later and then lose 5 Months and 29 days tax!! (dependant on the month )!!

I say its a crock of rusty sheriffs badge! And another way to cripple to motorist in the pocket again!!
In edit to my post you can get refunded however: from experience it is exceedingly difficult to claim back tax! Took me 9 months to claim back a VW Golf, got it back last week and only had 2 months tax refunded!! They didnt refund the 9 months that it took DVLA to process it!!! I wasnt that clear, apologies!!!

Thoughts anyone???

And i am willing to bet that you have to send off forms and apply for a refund! How many people are actually going to jump through all the hoops to get a refund?? I reckon the GOV are relying on all the lazy / older generation to not claim a refund - so they still profit!!!

My nan drives and she doesn't know what a direct debit is! She pays cash for everything down the post office on a monday!!

As soon as you notify DVLA, your direct debit stops and any full months get refunded. The bit where they are milking it though is that if you sell a car mid month, you only get the refund from the next month, but the new owner has to pay tax from the start of the current month. That means DVLA receives two months tax on the same month for the same vehicle!

Also, they will let you pay monthly from October. No news on how much extra that will cost though. It's highly unlikely to be at the same rate as 12 months tax

One form, fill it in and stick tax disc to it and post off, money comes a few weeks later, done it loads of times:)

I must be doing something wrong as the 5 or 6 times i have done its taken in excess of three months! Call me old fashioned but I dont like the look if it. And as i say, i like my mind bending discs, they make good coffee coasters!!

Never had a problem claiming tax back, takes 6 weeks max.

I think you are over reacting, the new system is only different in that you can't transfer the tax, the rest of it is just the same.

We shall see how it goes, Taxed and Tested adverts inAuto trader will never be the same....Oh wait, they liquidised the magazine too due to technology. I think having worked for the Government for 14 years now I am used to them changing the system to benefit themselves, my Pay, Pension and I will say this, They never change anything unless they profit from it.

Yep, make it tougher for poorer people living hand to mouth..

I always put a kiss on the bottom of my refund form, always like a kiss whilst i am being f**ked!

I work as an Rac patrol so have to check tax on screen b4 I tow a car so now won't be able to as you do get some **** takers trying it on when car ain't road legal. Really think this is a bad idea

I think its a stupid idea. What I was wondering is are they now going to refund weeks as opposed to months like they do currently. Because if not then who will want to sell their car half way through the month knowing they will be loosing out on 2 weeks tax, then the new owner would have to tax from the beginning of said month.

Which would mean that the dvla have gained a months free money.....

The options seem to be 12 months, 6 months or direct debit

Will the DD be 1/12 of the 12 month payment or will there be a surcharge like there is with 2 x 6 months
