I did my shocks at the weekend, and while i had the wheels off i notice the state of the back of the hubs.

Now the axle looks bad i was thinking about having it shot blasted and cleaned and refubing it,

But then I saw this,

Now the front is used but the rear looks like some one has been launching a boat with it in salt water.

So I was thinking might be best to just swap it, mines 1985 2.5n, so was wondering how compatible newer axles are?

Saw this on flee bay, Land Rover Defender 90 Rear Axle | eBay

But dont know if that would fit, as it dif looks central and mine is off centre.

any advice would be great...

That would bolt straight on, the photo just makes the diff look in the centre.

If you are going to the effort of changing the axle, have you considered converting to a disked version?

Will have to look into that then, i thought it might just be the photo, is there any thing involved conversion wise to disco axle or is it a straight swap?

I would advise new pipes to the calipers. The defenders already have a bias valve, and the diff ratio is the same so this is a straight forward conversion.

Just be aware that if you get an earlier Disco axle it will have imperial brake fittings on, whereas your 90 will be metric.

Not a problem as they both use 3/16" pipe, just means having a 10mm fitting one end for the T-piece and 3/8" UNF the other for the calipers.

You may need to change the diff flange also, 300tdi discos had a 3 bolt jobby with a rubber doughnut whereas yours will be the 4 bolt, it's a simple job to do and the flange costs about £30 including a new seal.

I want to change my 110 rear disc Salisbury axle for the later type - I know they are not as strong but in event of failure in a remote area the diff can more easily be replaced. As post 2004 defender axles are expensive and few and far between does anyone know if the P38 or Discovery axles will fit and what propshaft will be needed.

I think you'd be mad to change a Salisbury axle with discs! If the diff and axle are in good working order there's no reason why they'd fail. I'd stick with your current setup if I were you. But I'm not you and this is only my opinion!
