Hi all. I washed my engine bay the other day, left it for a couple days to dry and today i fitted a new aux drive belt and i now have this loud high pitch squeek. It's not the belt as the reason for the new belt was that the old one was squeeking and its a different noise. It only does it at over 1000rpm.
Anyone got any ideas please?

Well it could be anything attached to the belt ... my main squeak was eventually found to be nacked Alternator bearings ... though by the time I did owt about it the squeak sounded more like a clanging bell!.

Take the belt off again and feel for play in the alternator .. it should rotate very freely with absolutely no sideways or vertical movement.

Tensioner bearing also squeaks, as can the water pump, but the wp is more of a rumble, IME. Could also be power steering pump, or air con pump, but they hoth tend to whine rather than squeak ... the belt runs a few things it could be!!

Ok. So do you think i've buggered the bearings on 'something' by spraying water all over the engine? Or is it just a coincidence

I get a high pitched squeeking, usually comes from the passenger seat when wifey's in the car...

Been out tinkering for a couple hours now, checked the alternator and that seems fine. The only way i can stop this horrible chirping is by spraying wd40 on the tensioner while the engine is running. And then it only stops for a few seconds.
What does that mean?

p.s. its a 300tdi with no ac belt

Right. I think i remember reading about that.
Take the belt off, loosen the nut on the main part of the tensioner and jam a penny in the back and tighten it back up. Is that right?

Done the penny trick! It reduced the squeek to keep the neighbours happy. There is a bit of play in the tensioner pulley, thats not right is it? Just had a quick look on paddocks and i can buy a new tensioner but surely i just need new bearings if theres play. Does anyone know if i can just get new bearings or do i have to buy the whole tensioner?
