Hi all,
Just got a Range rover classic, 1989 automatic, with an Isuzu 2.8TD engine, the car runs fine, good amount of power and acceleration, but there are a few niggles I need to sort. Any help would be appreciated!

1. Under heavy load and high RPM, I get a hissing noise which seems to be coming from the left hand side of the dash, if I ease off the accelerator ever so slightly it stops, its like a limit that it hits and it hisses.

2. Black smoke under heavy load or booted at a junction. Leaves a small cloud, not lots behind me but I can see it out of wingmirror if say, going up a steep hill with my foot down.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

David.

hissing could be turbo leak from a loose hose, black smoke could be over fuelling or tuned fuel pump for extra power

Many thanks, gonna check it over tomorrow, as theres no lack of performance im not overly bothered about the smoke lol.

Dunno how the extra fueling for boost is managed on that engine but some older crude diesel systems just blindly pump more fuel in to cater for the expected boost, in which case if you have a boost leak you will over-fuel and smoke under conditions where its expecting boost. In which case fixing your inlet air leak will fix both problems.

Does anyone have a PDF of a range rover classic owners manual? Need to know layout of engine bay. I know engine will be different, just need a general idea. Air filter looks about 10 years old lol, so that's getting replaced.

I have one somewhere.....I will upload to Rapidshare and create a Linky to it for you....

Give me 5mins

OK Linkys....

This is a PDF Copy of the 87-89 Workshop Manual.....
http://rapidshare.com/files/2310071097/RRC 87 89 Manual.pdf

This is the full monty schabang - it is a RAR File so you will need WinRAR from WinRAR archiver, a powerful tool to process RAR and ZIP files to open and extract...once extracted you will find a Flash program called Welcome..this will open up a Flash Window where you can select allsorts of Original Publications on the Classics from 84-96...parts lists, handbooks, manuals, etc etc....

Linky to the 88-91 Handbook (which is part of the large file above)....

Hope they help!

many many thanks! Ill give it a good read now!
Going to be replacing the entire dash in it at some point, anyone done this and is it a pain in the ass?

Hmmm, Ive got a feeling the hissing may be something to do with the kickdown, as its an automatic. Its got an Isuzu 2.8 TD engine in at the mo, but they are low reving beasts, I think there might be a problem with the revs and it not kicking down. Anyone any ideas?

David.

I'm not %100 sure about your particular engine,
But there is normally a pressure release valve on the end of the inlet manifold on some jap motors, looks like a large blank nut , these are known to fail with age,

Most people remove them, get a 22mm socket , put nut on floor nut side down put socket on the top and hit with hammer, it tightens the valve up again and increases the boost..

This has been done more times than I can remember. Have a look on the owners club sites .. There will be full instructions on there somewhere.

Bit of an update.
The hiss seems to come from INSIDE the dash, not the engine bay, and its at the far left, almost coming from the air vent!

The diesel engine in your Rangy does not have vacume in the intake system, vacume is created via a vacume pump on the back of the alternator.

Spoke to someone at C&A 4x4 yesterday, and they said it could be either something to do with the cruise control from the old engine, or the blower system?

Just a thought about the hissing sound, had a 89 classic my self and it had a vacume operated flap to do with the heater in front passenger side of heater might be worth having look down there, had the pipe split on mine it made the brakes go heavy cos servo not getting full vacume.
