Can anyone offer any advise please? I have just fitted new parabolic springs and shocks to the front & rear of my short wheelbase series 3 landrover. There are no squeaks when i rock the vehicle however when driving on the road there is a vibrating noise from the rear of the vehicle when i decelerate and sometimes when i accelerate. I have greased all the bolts, loosened them, roked the vehicle and re-tightened them. The annoying thing is that the old leaf springs worked ok - I fitted parabolic springs thinking they would improve things. The ride is fine just this noise which comes and goes under acceleration/deceleration. Is this a case of if it is'nt broke - dont fix it!!!
Can anyone offer any help.

I apologise if I have broken forum etiquette - I am new to the the land rover scene having recently purchased a series 3. Having spent a long day covered in grease I was just wondering if anyone has encountered a similar problem and found a solution.
 
Well I's told you what to look at and what to go do :rolleyes: so nip over to intro, make an intro post and check your props as they may be where the squeak is coming from given that a lot of the paras tend to give a 2" lift

I has :p check for wear in props ;) if everything else is greased with new bushes etc only place the squeak/vibration is going to come from is there :rolleyes:

could be worth checking the torque on the bolts around the shackles and the bottom plates.

don't know the numbers though
 
If they've lifted the ride-height they could have over-stretched the prop.

I've had some bother with mine after fitting these...the big nut that holds the diff input bearing on had come undone (previous owner had omitted split pin). Not sure if that was down to the new springs or just I hadn't noticed it before. Sound a bit like a grinding noise on overrun and clunking...followed when it got worse by an(other) oil leak...

I'd:

- remove prop shaft, regrease and check for excessive play (just four nuts and bolts either end) CHOCK FRONT WHEELS AND RELEASE HANDBRAKE and gears OR IT WILL TRY AND BITE YOU!
- while that's off check the input flange to the diff, this is held on by one big castle nut behind the propshaft flange. Check its tight enough (not sure of torque look in manual) and refit split pin
- check diff oil!
 
Thanks for the helpful comments. I'll give them all a go at the weekend and see what happens.

If anyone can think of anything else I can try whilst I'm pulling it apart I'd be grateful if you could let me know so i can add it to my list!
 
how did you get on? I just bust my landy, brand new lovely parabolics on a 1961 109, good ride, all felt right; slight burble of noise when axle went over a bump. Then a slight clunk at low speed and low torque, now no drive to rear axle and it looks like the nuts holding diff to axle are working very loose - plenty of new oil leaking out.I'm guessing the prop overstrecthed the pinion, and has shunted (hopefully not stripped) the studs holding the whole lot together. Will know in the morning!
