I've just bought a 2003 53 Range Rover Vouge 4.4 V8 petrol & have a few questions for other owners, first of all the car seems to have used about 1 Ltr of water in the week I've been using it & I wondred if this was normal?

The car seems to have a few problems which the last owner never told me about & I did'nt find out until I got the car home. First & most annoying is the passenger side mirror just folds back then makes a clicking noise when I try to fold the mirrors in and then folds back out again, also the steering reach motor has gone I think, it just makes a noise every time I get in but never moves, the tilt part works fine.

I know at least a couple of these are common problems but is it possible to repair the mirror or do I need to buy a complete unit :confused:

mate sorry to say this i would not worry about mirrors but the water prob go with mhm ebay buy by any chance?Good luck think you need to search rr threads mate
 
Thanks for trans mhm the ebay question is because of the amount of new members that come on here after buying off ebay with probs if its a shed it goes on ther, no one else will touch it but someone on ebay will!
 
glideman go to rr section and have a read you will find a lot of info.but i will say water loss is one of the main reasons for walking away from the rr.
 
Go to a garage or find a mate with a tester and get the coolant system static tested. Also say where you are someone local may have a static test rig.
 
if its loesing water and its not leaking out, sorry to be the one to tell you mate but its probably got a blown head gasket! and the headache only gets worse when it starts overheating!!

been there done that, and still got the nurofen box to prove it!

Thanks guys, don't think it's a head gasket as the oil is clear & no residue in the expansion tank. Maybe a leaking hose which I don't know about. Took the mirror to bits today and it all looks fine, the worm gear & motor work fine. Stripped it all down & re-greased it all & it works! Went to the shops folded the mirrors back great! Came out to unfold them which it did 20+ times outside the house & it started to make the clicking noise again ;-( Maybe a micro switch. I'm a ex-mechanic so not too worried about fixing stuff myself, just don't want to spend all weekend doing it.
If all the small problems get fixed is this likely to be a reliable car? I have no misconseptions of it being as reliable as my last car, a Subaru Forester but do they CONSTANTLY go wrong?
I have always wanted a Range Rover it has always been my dream car ever since I was a child & we used to see them & say one day. . . .
It does have full service history (book stamped) but when I got it & took the air filter & cabin filter out they looked like they had done 50,000 miles! This was supposed to have been serviced at Royal Ascot Land Rover? The guy who I got it from as a one owner car had spent a fortune on it & lived in a big house near London so it's had the money spent on it & all seems to be fine apart fropm a few small problems. Oh and the TV wont work which I assume is with the analog being switched off? Small stuff but time consuming. . . Thanks for the replys & hopefully I will be able to do a couple of guides to post once I find my way around the massive list of parts on these things. It's not surprising they go wrong when you consider the amount of tech on the car, probably 5 cars worth :D I do still love it though, when it's fixed it will be a nice car.
 
hi glideman , re water problem .this may help .take car fo a spin to get engine hot , then put some clean cardboard on floor under all engine compartment , so if anything leaking will show on cardboard and its easy to see where from , if no leaks then possible you have air in system ,run engine with header cap off and heating in car on full ,if theres any air in it will show bubbling in header bowl if so take 6mil pipe off the rad on top , be carefull as the connected piece is part of the rad and can break off so be very gentle in removing it after 5-10 mins all air should have gone so top the header up to the proper mark reattach everything turn heater off and turn control down to lo then give it a good run and recheck .if all ok leave till next day and check water level again and if ok give it another run then recheck its advisable to keep checking for couple of days if no alteration then it would appear all air out of system but do check regularly the level ... i no this works exactly as it says on the tin cos i had to do it very recently and was shown this by a specialist who is a mate .. hope all goes well cheers mozz
 
Thanks Mozz, sounds like a good idea to me. I'll give it a go. I did give the top hose a squeez the other day and it did feel like some air was in the hose.
 
Just had a look at the header tank & it seems to have a screw in plastic bit, comes from the hose you mention. Would that not be the air bleed? See pic, maybe a bit small:doh:

good on you . water problem may be something simple like a hose connector (it was on my cousins l322) the l322 engine is far different to a p38,my l322 vogue tv is still working so not sure if its your problem.stick with it anything is fixable.
