Did you sign anything saying 'sold as seen'?, stick at it with the CAB and find out your rights then approach the seller.

Why not get an independent report done on the car. Perhaps a specialist or ,motoring organisation will do this for a fee. You will at least have something to argue with to get your money back.

Trying to ring my local cab all day but no one picks up. Will try again 2moro.

Does anyone know the facts about fit for purpose or consumer rights. Basically car was on auto trader and on description there was zero mention (obviously) about these problems. He also stated face to face it runs perfectly as he used it to go shooting on weekends. It is a dealership,A family run business at this posh house out in the country with tonnes of new audis/bmw's parked on grass. Can't say name I guess?

Mot till October. Iv had it just over a week but 3 of those days I was away so didn't drive it. So not like iv had it a month and now I'm complaining. Fully skinted myself getting this aswell

Just a quick update. Called them this morning and they told me to bring it in and they'll look at it. Took it back to them at noon. Mentioned the problem in question which there gonna look at over the weekend. Also mentioned the little problems like the sunroof not closing using the button and the front doors central locking not working (having to use key manually to lock)

They just said those are small problems and they won't touch em and it's my job to fix them but they will look at the crunching noise from rear.

That sounds quite a fair response to me. You expect a few things wrong in a 15 year old car. That they'll look at the "big" problem sounds right. Fingers crossed on what you get back, hopefully problem fixed or what you paid.

Got my car back as of yesterday. Phone conversation was quite brief, to the point I can't remember exactly what the problem found was and when I picked the car up the person in question wasn't around. All I know is it was something to do with a "shaft" of some sort that was seized (he asked me if I'd been off road which I hadnt) and it cost them around £170 to fix.

Was just wanting to get home so tested it obviously on way home and the noise/crunchy sound had completely gone so it's been fixed. Just waiting till tomorrow for the dealer to call me and give me a proper conversation on what the problem was and to send me a copy of the job.

Well done Scott1102.. Gosh it bring back older memories.. It's true as one other poster said that many general mechanics don't know much about Freelanders... I might be a world away in Australia, but I bought my first 1.8 K series Freelander (2000 model) in March of 2011 as I was impressed by it's looks.. then, after frustration from ordinary mechanics overcharging me one by one by one by one, I got even, and now, I do my own repairs. Timing belt, head gasket, brakes, IRD, etc. I've learnt through trial and error on the way and it cost me a few hundred in tools including some special tools, but I can tell you that these are great vehicles and a joy to drive. Now I'm not a mechanic by trade or discipline and my day job is actually the government not automotive, but I was amazed by the wealth of information out there on the Internet about the Freelander. Anyways, good luck with your 1.8, I have both a 1.8 and a KV6, here my latest video on the 1.8
