hello again all,

I’m back into discovery TD5 ownership.

Straight away after a long run I have already noticed an oil leak. I’ve yet to pin point the source however I thought I’d see if I’m missing something obvious.

The oil seems very clean and a golden colour, doesn’t really smell if that makes sense. It’s collecting at the lower part of the bell housing and across the black bar where it drips on to the floor. Looking up towards the FPR area it definitely looks wet higher up however only on that side of the rear of the engine. More investigations tomorrow however in the mean time any thoughts or areas to look at?

Many thanks

Ben

Obviously my first thoughts as my last Disco had the same issues. Only reason I’m not convinced is the oil that is at the bottom seems too ‘clean’ however it doesn’t have that horrible smell of gearbox/transmission oil?

Knowing me I will end up changing out the cam cover gasket howeve it looks wet around the FPR area, what other pipes are in that area that could be culprits?

I have had similar issue and it was the rocker cover gasket.
If you change use the right one, there are different for early and late models.

Mine is a 2004 Landmark. Does any one have the correct part for the rocker cover gasket so I order the correct one?

Right,

So last night I steam cleaned her off and wiped down any where that hada trace of oil or water so she sat dry all night. put down the obligatory cardboard. Came out to a dry piece of card board. Started first time and drove 2 miles to work where I was greeted with dripping off the bottom of the sump. It is diesel and has come from the FPR general area, ive since noticed that the underbody of the car on the off side is wet/damp and am assuming this is diesel too that is probably being flug back when on the move at speed and then it drips down which makes it look like an oil leak?

I need to confirm the location exactly and I wont rule out any oil leaks just yet.

PS what colour is gearbox/diff fluids ( Manual gearbox by the way)

......and @jamesmartin gets it right again.
Imagine having you as a neighbor - the Doris would think land rovers are the most reliable vehicles, because she wouldn't see me working on it quite as much with jamesmartin getting it sorted in his shed:D

Well I’ve got her going on a ramp later today to confirm the source... I have a feeling that the gold coloured liquid was Probably diesel and it was Mixing with oil etc that covered the bell housing. Now the housing is clean it’s just diesel(I hope).

Once I’ve sorted the diesel issue I will soon know if I have an oil leak or not.

What brand FPR’s do people fit?

There are plenty out there to buy and the Prices do fluctuate?

Do I go OE or aftermarket, suggestions?

As it is not an easy fit use OEM or genuine. Do it once do it right!
(especially if you want to keep the car for some more years)

That's why I got someone else to do mine. The first FPR was faulty and leaked so he had to fit another.... Very glad I wasn't doing it.

Just a thought, the Air Con condensate drain leaves a bit of a mess. Maybe adding to the mix?
