Hi, I've got a freelander 1 TD4 s 2004. I've just joined. What's the top things people would suggest doing to it? I've recently installed a touch screen stereo, wind deflectors and have window tints to go in the rear windows. What other mods should be done? I'm also keeping an eye out for some roof bars and a new viscous joint as mine gave up on me over the weekend.

Welcome to LZ Mate! :)

First off, have you done all the usual tests for the VCU etc?
Go browse the Freelander section for details.
The Freelander folks on here know just about all you will ever need to know.
There is a wealth of info and expertise on that sub-forum.

Dont waste yer money on bling, buy it 4 matching tyres and a bloody good service otherwise its gonna be the most pimped motor in the scrap yard.

Yep I hear ya there, I've got that all in hand that's my job for this week, got the filters and oil, I'm gunna give it a complete service, put in new filters and inspect everything and even if there doesn't seem to be a problem I'm gunna take a look at the service and replacement intervals and stuff and look into the limited history to see what may be close to failing before I have enother incident like the viscous joint (not sure if that is proper name for it)

I had a 2004 fl1 and it was the best car I had for what I paid for it. Most of its faults were little niggling ones, the drop links start wearing after a year causing knocking from below but at least they are cheap, the fuel cradle rusts really well and the back door sometimes refused to unlock, usually caused by a dodgy window position switch. the first thing I did was put 4 new matching tyres on it and had the vcu and bearings replaced. I also had coolant disappearing, firstly it was escaping under pressure from micro cracks in the neck of the plastic resevoir, change it for the newer one if it hasnt already been done. Then it was losing coolant from some invisible place on the engine so I put a bottle of sealant in it against the advice of nearly everyone but it worked. Mine had only done 62k when I got it but the belts where showing signs of cracking, get yours checked. Then the stereo packed up, then the front power socket stopped working. Before the radio packed up, I had fitted a dash cam but it interfered with the radio and I never managed to cure that so when the radio stopped working, it was a relief. I only got rid of it because it was not being used in !ockdown and I already had two other cars and three motorbikes and my insurance bill was crippling me.

Hello and welcome:)
as said above a good service and dont assume have been changed do all oils and fluids, brakes as well then you know its done and when

Thank you for this information, seems like your old car and mine have lots of similarities lol. My rear windows don't work (which I don't mind) and yesterday afternoon my drivers side rear door stopped unlocking with a second press of the key, have had to reach in and open from the inside yesterday and this morning. My fuel tank support had also started to rust, it was the only thing on the Mot as an advisory, I'm thinking about maybe doing my own rust protection and trying to come up with a bracket to support it myself then if ones out there get a bash guard of some sort to protect it. Belts, I've replaced the main auxiliary belt as after speaking to a colleague he said to take a look and this was obviously ageing/cracking, I've got the other smaller belt in the boot ready to go on, I may even do it this lunch time. Mines done 155k, done lots of mines but I actually enjoy owning it and working on it so much. Its being a pain but I'm even more enfused to get all the problems with it fixed and keep it on the road as I've only seen a handfull of the fl1s, and for the money I paid honestly think if I look passed the little niggles, it's the best car for the money I've owned yet. That sucks you had to get rid of yours but it sounds like it won't be to badly missed as you've got other projects and means of transport. Those bloody insurance companies, take the p***, couldn't believe how much they wanted me to pay for the fl1, it's a 2 litre, its slower 0-60 and top speed then other cars I've owned and don't think other then hight it's actually any bigger either, so really don't understand how it is as much as it is to insure (know there's some safety features and stuff that come into it but I still don't think it makes alot of sence), thank you for the heads up, I'll make sure to take a look at the drop links

Thank you, thinking I want to keep my own record of everything I do to it, like some sort of spreadsheet to track dates, have you ever done or seen anyone do anything like this? Would you have any suggestions for best way to format it?
