Yesterday, just before stopping, foot on brake, clutch disengaged, I heard a sort of gentle knocking noise coming from somewhere underneath the car. it only happened, literally, for the last few feet of travel whilst almost stationary. I managed to repeat it a couple of times while trying to listen exactly where it was coming from, but then it stopped and I couldn't get it to do it again. Tried slow circles in both direction and braking hard and soft on both locks, but couldn't get the noise again. Can't find any info on this so I'm a bit puzzled?? Anyone had anything similar?

I'd check the front propshaft UJ's for wear first.

although - got a similar noise on mine - caused by the (lack of) anti-rattle shims on the front brake pads (old ones disintegrated last week when i changed the pads! thats tomorrows job!

Been running around all day, including towing, and the noise hasn't happened once. I checked all UJ's, front and back. They are all good. Rubber donut at the back has a couple of cracks in it, but is otherwise good. Only thing I found, and I'm not sure whether it's a problem or not, was that there was a small amount of play where the flange (that the front prop rear UJ bolts onto) goes into/comes out of the transfer box.

Just wondering now whether it was something in the boot rattling around, as it was full of horse tack, etc, yesterday.

I've Tracked the problem to the hand brake. It's not releasing properly. Not sure whether it's cable or shoes, so I'm going to have to have the drum off to have a look.
