Before I start cable checking I have just replaced my binnacle with a flat dog metal one and the housing too. I have also finally removed the green bulb hoods from the gauges. Everything worked fine before. On refitting today and turning key on the fuel and temp gauges max out. Sounds like an earthing issue - could it be related to the gauge clamps earthing on the new binnacle or something else likely or obvious.

If not I guess I am voltmeter and fly leads seeking issues

Both the fuel and temp guages earth through the sensors, sounds like something isn't connected right ..

Hi - seemed to have resolved it - after noticing the dipped beams weren't working. I had managed to dislodge Dim/DIp relay (or whatever the non dim/dip version is called) and when I plugged it back in everything worked. Not sure why that would impact gauges though.

Okay put the fireworks and banners away gauges still playing up. So taken them out twice and still getting max readings. I find it hard to believe both fuel and temp have both failed at same time.

I have taken the small instrument wiring loom covering tape off and I seem to have this:

White plug with
Red and white wire - instrument illumination
Black wire each for everything bar two ring terminals
White / black wire to heated screen tell-tale
Green
Green / light blue
Green / black

Having followed this to the instrument ends

Red and white wire and a black wire to each bulb holder
White and black wire and black wire to heated screen tell tale bulb
Solid green x2 one to temp gauge one to fuse gauge
Green and black wire to fuel gauge
Green and blue to temp gauge

Two black wires from bulb holders to ring connectors - can't remember where these used to be earthed.

So assuming gauges didn't magically break and assuming sensors didn't both go - what could still be the issue and where does the other end of the white plug go. What should I be looking at across the gauges with a DVM? thanks

Just for completeness - incase anyone searches int he future - I had managed to fubar the gauges removing the green filters ....
