Hi folks,

I have just bought my very first land rover. A new defender 90 county hardtop which i am very excited about picking up next week. However, i have a problem. I have a 5 year old daughter that I need to transport in the centre seat and the lap belt is not safe enough. I automatically thought it would be easy to fit a 3 point belt or safety harness. Not so simple it seems.

The problem is I my wife won't let me pick the car up unless i can resolve this problem.

Does anybody have any solutions or photos of how it has been done.
Thanks

Yes! put your wife in the middle :)

Either that, or go and buy a car seat which is safe with a lap belt.

How old is she? If she is in the second stage car seats then the Maxi Cosy Priory is designed to be used with a lap belt only. The Maxi Cosy Priory XP is almost identical but is the newer model and is supposedly only supposed to be used with a 3-point harness, but personally I think the XP is better suited to a lap belt only because it kind of clamps onto the lap belt.

Not sure what to suggest if she is still in the rear-facing seat, sorry.

I had the same problem with my old Transit van!

I made that suggestion of putting my wife in the middle as well, not going to do that again....
my daughter is 5 going on fifteen so I don't know what age the maxi cosy will accommodate. I was hoping somebody would tell me that there is a company doing the fit, I am thinking of bolting a metal sheet to each side of the bulkhead and then fixing a harness to that.
any thoughts about that?

thanks

Well, my first suggestion was going to be: "put your wife in the back." and my second was going to be: "buy her a freelander." but...

well i am amased to hear a 5 year old will sit in a kiddie seat. my boys are 6 and 8 and neither of them would even sit on a feckin booster cushion after the age of 4 .

Well, you'd better be careful Yella, there is a new law being introduced in the next few months that means any child under 1.5m (although there seems to be some confusion here are some people are reporting it as 1.35m) that makes it a legal requirement for them to sit in some sort of approved child seat.

Though I sympathise, sometimes my 20 month old refuses to sit in her seat! It's like trying to wrestle a bloody octopus into it when she decides to be awkard!

try gaffer tape matt, it works a treat, also good if you put a strip across their mouths ;)
