[GALLERY=][/GALLERY]Hi all,

I have recently bought a 1986 Range Rover Classic 4 door

I will be fully restoring it and making it better in the process.

Any major things to look out for when restoring ?

The doors and wings are all very good, there is some rust/corrosion to the outriggers which will be getting replaced.

Many Thanks

H

Any recommended shops or sites to buy parts from ?

It’s a long time since I looked under a classic range Rover
But from memory not only is the chassis an issue the body was a big problem lots of hidden places for corrosion to take hold

Hi and welcome!

I used to have a two door Range Rover with a similar interior. Yours looks quite tidy on the outside, but they do rust well underneath, as mentioned.

Try the likes of Craddocks, paddocks, brookwells, etc. For used parts, look at eBay and FB marketplace.

thank you all for your replies
yes your all spot on regarding the rust, i will be taking my time stripping most of it all back and repairing the problems !

Thank you guys
H

Hello all

Update to all
The car is now at my house - had to make space for her !

first thing i noticed coming off the transport truck is that it has no brakes !

Will be doing a full service & interior & exterior clean
Then
1) sparks
2) all filters - carbs, air, pollen, fuel, oil
3) oil change
4) coolant change and clean out rad
5) change brake fluid and bleed out

is there anything else you wizards suggest to add to the list above

thanks
H

If it’s not moved for some time, the callipers might also be seized so factor in new or stripping down and rebuilding. It might benefit from new discs and pads too.

I know it’s not a Landy but nice G-wagen!

IMHO, first port of call with that needs to be checking structural integrity ... from one of the pics above, it looks like the OSF A-post and cill need some love :)

@Knappster its been sat for a fair few months, thanks for the info buddy i will do that also to the brakes. and thanks great cars the G's are !

@saxavordian, nice drawings ! and thank you !

@Disco1BFG yep you have seen it right away, a chap in Congleton makes the panels, i'm going to replace both inner and outer sills (both-side), battery box, and maybe 2 rear wheel arches !

what oil do you suggest to run - 20w50 i've been reading fully or semi synth ?

let the fun begin..

thank you all !

It's scary... I've used Easy-On panels from Froggatts in Bosley Cross for both our D1's .... been very pleased with the fit - close enough to go and collect too ;)

What ever the handbook says..... I run our 300Tdi's on fully synthetic 10W40 .... Some folk says synthetic gets past seals and such, but this is not my experience .... if it's leaking it needs fixing ...:)

@Disco1BFG thanks for comments buddy, appreciated. And indeed sorry not Congleton but Macc ! will be taking a trip down very soon. !

@RangeRoller dt, indeed 3.5L v8 petrol carb. Yes will be quite a project ! so far ;
Inner & outer sills (both sides)
Rear wheel arch (both sides)
Front inner wings (both sides)
will need to be replaced although rear wheel arches are actually quite solid, might. as well do them whilst i'm there.

The 2 rear passenger doors don't open - any idea why ? Maybe a stuck rod or just seized up ?

thanks all
