Hi there for letting me into your world of landy knowledge and know how. I own a 2000 defender td5, and I am looking at a defender 130 with a 300 engine in it, that needs a lot of work. Do you think that it is a bit of a handful to do up or stick with the td5. What's the most common thing to look for on a 130, apart from chassis. Thanks again stu.

Bulkhead and it's not nicked

Hi and welcome!

I’ve not got a 130 but the main issues as mentioned are the chassis and bulkhead. And checking the chassis numbers and history to make sure it’s not stolen or a ringer.

The Td5 is a good engine, can be remapped for more poke. The 300Tdi is good, and the last of the engines without lots of electricals. It would be my choice of engine.

Thanks for the welcome. I will check all the numbers to see if ok. Will post pics etc on the rebuild if I get it.
The only thing I did pick up on is doors and needs an outrigger.

Depends on condition of your current one. If it’s known good one could put a 300 in one you got.
If it’s time for a change then check bulkhead/chassis as mentioned take for good run look for anything untoward before deciding.
300TDI is pretty bomb proof usually fixable with hammers & spanners.

Hi Range Roller ,
thanks, so it's the usual bits that are worth checking as on all defenders.
Thanks for the advice, as told the 300tdi is bomb proof.
My td5 is chipped so goes well and sounds great, also a bit scary when going fast on knobleys, so time for a slow down, lol.

My 1998 was incredibly slow but would drive same if you hooked a house to the back. They aren’t all like that it was bit strange, slow but very very powerful.
Got nicked in end, used to pull out cash machines, then dumped. Broke my heart, left a hole that only a RR was big enough to fill.
You are probably familiar with security issues

Yes security is a worry with these trucks. I have a peddle lock also a crook lock type thing that goes on the steering wheel, but it's only a deterent. Thinking of a tracker, but it's more cost again.
