Hi everyone. Bought my first Disco 2 a little while back. Its a 1999 TD5 and I think the Landmark model. Went through a phase of wishing I'd bought Japanese (sorry) when I started finding "issues" (well, leaks and suspension probs really) but I've got over it since a mate who knows assured me I've got a good un and its worth making the effort, so I'm up for it now.
Expect I shall be infesting the Discovery section and picking your collective brains very shortly so thanks in advance.

Welcome there! All landys have problems, and no matter what the problem is you can probably find the answer in the disco section, somebody has had the same problem before!

Please do not assume that Japanese automatically equals reliability. I had a Nissan Patrol which had the flywheel oil seal go, soaking the clutch, snapped a shock absorber, had a leaking tractor joint (and there equivalent of the LR chrome ball is integral so the whole front axle would have to be replaced!) and then it cracked it's head hydraulically locking the engine with coolant.
At the same time I also owned a Nissan Terrano 2 which would sometimes refuse to respond to the fly by wire accelerator. Then one day it would start at all. I had fuel getting to the injector pump but nothing coming from it so hoping that this was the problem I tried to remove it only to eventually discover that this is a engine out job.
As piece of crap number one was clogging up my garage having a second hand head fitted, I decided to bin piece of crap number two and stuck it on ebay describing it as 'dogs discharge'
Now have a Disco 300tdi which combines excellent reliability, cheap and available spares, and simplicity.

I looked at a Terrano before I bought the Disco. It was 10 years old with 75,000 miles from new and 7 owners, and the chassis looked like it was made pressed tin.... I passed on that.
When issues arose with the Disco I did consider briefly whether I shouldn't have bought a Shogun but I'm glad I didn't, they look like a sumo wrestler in a track suit.
