my freelander td4 2004 facelift has only 1 key and fob and I am going to france in easter, yes I know what your thinking........so how much to get a new set and any suggestions for other than the stealer price....cheers.

Get a few key blanks off fleabay and get them cut to match your key - then tape your one key onto the ignition switch under the plastic cover - the switch will see the transponder in that key and your un-chipped keys will all work - not so secure but will cost you about £3 a key - Won't interfere with the fob and you can unlock the car using the extra keys.

cheers dfossil, so the new cut key will just slot into the ignition barrel and everything will work ok then, the original transponder signal will be read from the outside of the barrel ?

Yup - mine is just taped onto the outside of the switch inside the plastic cover - it is read easily by the switch and the car starts normally - the fob works normally too as it's nothing to do with it, and the keys all work the door locks manually - they were cut at the local hardware shop - I reckon if anyone was going to steal my FL1 by friggin the immobilizer they would not even know until they had done it that they didn't need to - so I am not worried by that slight lack of security - and as an added safeguard - your proper key is still available to you inside the vehicle - you know where it is

I got a key from Timpson's the shoe repair people and it will unlock the car via the key hole and you can starter her up as well as it was programed all for £60 and it stopped the wife moaning which I would have given much more for.

Google Auto Locksmiths, I used one when I lost my key (actually the wife lost it). He used the car registration to get details to cut a blank. I got the one without the fob unlocking buttons, but he coud have got me one with if we'd been in the area longer.

so I did buy a key off the bay and had it cut, it works by holding the chipped key next to it, so thats ok then, all I need now is to buy a fob and try to find someone from my area (dudley west mids) to code it to my car,,,,,,any body willing to help ? or where can I get it done at a reasonable cost ?

I wonder if anyone tries stealing cars without the keys any more?

It's become mandatory to use transponder chips so I bet no one ever attempts it, taping your transponder to the receiver is probably not very risky.

can get a local Rover indi to recode both my old fob and a new one for £30 notes....seems reasonable for 10 mins work lol

is it easy to get the steering cowling off to hide the chip, could look in my manual but feeling a bit lazy atm.
