Hi guys, today I fitted a new Lucas light switch to my defender, I had a new indicator switch in the garage (also Lucas) which I bought in 2018 so though I may as well fit that as well, my steering wheel is completely straight but the indicators cancel on the right turn when signalling right which is infuriating, I saw many posts about this and it looks to be a common issue, with the steering wheel off I can still make it do it but turning the plastic ring round and the arrow is in the right position, guess I’m going to have to either refit the old one, or buy new?
 
hello, i had same problem, perfect on left turn, cancelled on right. I cured problem by not fitting the rubber bellows into the plastic shield.

Thanks it does seem better with them rubber things out of the hole, but still not right, I think the part is faulty sadly, even though it new I got it in 2018 so won’t be able to claim it
 
You've probably done this already, but it's worth having a look at the self cancelling mechanism again. On mine there's two metal tabs on the steering wheel which slot into corresponding gaps in a blue plastic ring which has the eccentric on it that flips the switch. It's possible for this to be 180 degrees out, in which case the indicators will self cancel at odd times. Try moving it round 180 degrees and see if it's any different. I've even had this problem after work was done by a garage so it's an easy mistake to make, even (or perhaps especially) by professionals.

Cheers brown, I’ve tried that and even with the steering wheel and plastic covers taken off I can still make it cancel in the right turn by spinning it a few times, the ratchet mechanism inside doesn’t feel right like the old one I had took out, the problem with the old one was the gator was split and the writing was rubbing off so looked a little tatty, gutted to have wasted so much time
 
Bend the stalk down slightly and refit the bellows, and it will be fine.

The stalk needs to be bent at the base.
Thanks lightening, I tried bending it a bit but it still doesn’t feel right, I’m going to fit the old one to see if it works properly again, I’m pretty certain it’s a faulty unit even though Lucas have a seemingly good reputation

Lucas had a good reputation when their stuff was.made in Birmingham but they are now no better than britpart.

I had the same issue with mine and it was nothing to do with the mechanism but was the rubber bellows applyin pressure to The switch. The fact that is is better with the rubber out of
The hole Also indicated this as the source of The problem. A bit of Carful bending should Solve it.

thanks, but you shouldn’t have to be bending new parts, what make did you use?

It was a Lucas one. You have to remember this is a defender and if you have ever seen any of the videos of the original Land Rover production line you will see that bending parts and adjusting to fit with hammers was part of the factory production when new. Why you then think a new part will fit without fettling after the vehicle has had 30 years of use when it didn’t new from the factory is beyond me.
 
Yes I bent it down slightly, but even with the rubber taken out it still does it sometimes (granted less) but still doesn’t work brilliantly
If that is the case I suggest you bend it a little further. After a few attempts I managed to get mine to work without issue and mine was the same as yours with the rubber gator causing it to self cancel early.
 
As above! Bend it a bit more and the rubber gaiter will then work in your favour, helping to stop premature self cancelling on right turns
 
I’ve bent it as much as I’m willing to, it’s better, I can get round a corner now with out it clicking off but a sharp turn it still does it, honestly it’s a right bummer
 
Try a different make of switch

You might still have to bend it, the general alignment of the cowling has an effect as well.
