Head gasket was/is likely a first big job for many of us series drivers. Work through the checks suggested and you should find the problem.
With those in line clear fuel filters don't expect it to be full but there should be some fuel in it.

Could it be a stuck float flooding the engine? I'm not familiar with the carbs (mine's diesel)

It would make my week if it was! I'm struggling to picture the inside of the engine to work out how fuel could get into which bits. I guess a problem with the carb could help explain why the throttle pedal wasn't having any effect on the running...

It would run down the inlet and into the cylinder then down past the rings. A long shot as this would only happen when the fuel pump / engine is running. I'm suspect the fuel pump more is it could leak a bigger volume in a shorter time.

I'll finally get a chance to look into it again tomorrow and I'll be starting with the fuel pump. Fingers crossed that'll prove to be the problem. I'll let you know. Thanks again.
