Hi,

Thought I would introduce myself to the forum.

Just got myself a nice clean 90 (I thought) with some nice parts on it and a few parts on order.

It's a 2003 monte carlo blue with very little rust but I am having a few issues after only two weeks!

Am more use to sport "type" of cars last being my clio V6 mk2 that got chopped in to afford the 90. I also have a td4 facelift commercial freelander for taking the dog around but plan on selling it after I have the 90 up to par.

Am from Aberdeen and am a rig-mech so kinda handy with the spanners and always fancied a defender but am by no standard a car-mech so may have a few questions over the duration of my ownership haha.

Anyway, hello guys and girls!

Are there many people from Aberdeen and any ideas of a good garage to take it to? Have a clunking sound that seems to be coming from the drivetrain, think its a shaft or dual mass but need it confimed.

what area ?

caldwell and dempster in banchory would be my first shout if your out that way.

what part of the shire you from ? am in culter

chock the wheels and get underneeth with the hand brake off , stick a stilson on the shaft and see whats moving .....

- look at your UJ's and diffs. now does the TD5 have 1 piece halfshafts and drive members ala disco ? my 90 had a clunk and it turned out to be the splines between halfshafts and drive members at the rear and the front UJ was shot.

Am from the town centre. I have tried to call Greenbank 4x4 with no joy so far. Am not to keen on driving any real distance as it really isn't a healthy sound atall.

All I really need is it diagnosed as am sure I will be able to do the work if I could just find out where the noise is coming from.

dont know greenbank.

northeast 4x4 out on the back road to auchenblae from stoney

jim king auto at inverurie - he might not exude 4x4 when you look at his garage and signs , but hes rather handy in his tomcat.......

if i wasnt currently in turkmenistan id take a look for you but alas - the joys of offshore life !
theres a landy specialist at kemnay.

As Top Side has already said. Get underneath an see whats moving that shouldn't ;) it's most likely to be backlash from worn splines.
When in gear give the front prop a twist, depending how far it moves will give you an idea just how much wear is in the front part of the transmission.
Upto an 1/8th of a turn is fairly normal, 1/8th to a 1/4 keep a close eye on, beyond a 1/4 and it'll clunk like a good un
Four main areas.
Transfer box output to front prop drive flange. Front prop splines, Front Diff and or Wheel drive flanges. N.B. not an exhaustive list and assumes gear box is good

grimmer - they are was in there once with my 90 when i first got it asking dumbass questions. - i used to live in auchenblae before i moved north again.

how ever thats even further south than north east 4x4 especially if he doesnt want to travel far.

Hi copland, welcome to landyzone! As has been said, sounds like uj's or splines. Get under and give prop shafts a twist and lookout for play in any of the 4 uj's. Am in Aberdeen so pm if you're stuck.:D

Yeah distance is a bit of an issue as the noise is so bad and am also waiting for a new fpr to be delivered cause that's ****ing out aswell.

Have manage to get hold of North East 4x4 and they are going to have a look over it on Saturday morning for me so hopefully should get it "sorted" as soon as I know what to sort haha.

On another note, Top Drive are you a driller or rig-mech? Just interested about the user name, we have a TDS-3 that keeps me busy at work.
