Through reading lots of posts on here, would I be correct in saying that the new tyres I had fitted to the front of my 2006 Freelander could have caused my rear diff to fail?

The rear diff started making a loud drone last week - went to the local dealer who took a sample of oil and found metal shards in it!!! Not good.

Now on the lookout for a recon or 2nd hand diff and a garage to fit it - the dealer quoted me 620 quid for a recon unit and fitted - is that reasonable?

DEFINATELY...never put new tyres on the front of a freelander unless you fit new ones at the same time to the rear!.
The new tyre will have a larger rolling diameter causing them to turn the front of your prop faster in relation to the rear...this locks up your VCU and in turn will cook the diff.

Id check your VCU isnt damaged too - see numerous threads on here regarding it chief.


AND GET THE NEW TYRES SWAPPED TO THE BACK PRONTO!

Thanks for the quick response - this is what I suspected (bit late though). I had the prop shaft bearings replaced at the same time as the front tyres (rear are about 4000 miles old) last month - looks like this month is going to be as expensive as last month...never mind, the kids ate last week!!:doh:

Will change tyres over soonest.

Whilst at tyre fitters I've warned Freelander owners not to fit new tyres to the front, unless they've got new on the rear… and why… and the story behind it… when seeing them get their Freelander tyres fitted. Even to the extent of offering to swap em meself as I now what’s going to happen. I just can't see why a formal statement int been sent round all tyre fitters to update em wiff a formal guideline in Freelander 1 tyre fitting, or to ask on ere first. :doh: Same as getting a battery fer me v6. They all have books that tell you to fit one that’s much smaller than the Land Rover Freelander Driver Hand Book recommendation for the v6. Un un un they tells you the LRDHB is wrong. :doh: Last time I bought a battery I was served by a disco owner. After the above happened again, he said he’d sell me what I wanted. So I bought as per the LRDHB a proper sized battery. :)

Tis a tratter boy conspiracy to destroy all Freelanders. That’s what I ses. :mad:

hiya

i am in the process of looking around for some new tyres as my rear tyres are about 5mm and the front are just above 2mm, so going to get the fronts replaced and defently going to put the new ones on the rear.

have noticed a slight noise on the rear and was wondering if it could be down to the tyres.

nice one will hopefully save me having to replace parts that i can prevent.

ive got 215 x 65 x 16 bridgestones on the rear which have got plenty left on them, would like to get another pair of them so they all match.

got a pair of bridgestones down to £67.00 each from a neighbour i just hope i dont go round the corner and find another freelander up on bricks.:eek::eek:

they just seem extremely cheap to me , he says he gets them from work.
 
Interesting.Will be swapping out all 4 tyres soon but that's good to know for when we need replacement fronts in future.

hi guys what a coincidents me changed front tyres 4/5 mnths back been having what i would describe as bit of vibration occassionally from middle under my td4 , couldnt vizably see any probs, so drove sensable any how just had rear tyres changed as i noticed down to limit had em fitted sat morn drove out tyre shop 5oo yrds down road u/j went on rear prop how lucky is that so booked in for new u/j and center bearings hope the rest holds out!! :doh:
 
yu did fit the new tyres to the back on both occasions - didnt you?

can i expect even more probs now then if so im selling we have had for four years and has been very relyable up to last 6mnts 2 tyre on front then alternator then battery then fuel pump then turbo solinoid now back tyre and now rearprop u/j is the list now going to get even biggar cus of not doing the tyre that no one seams to know about. chris g
 
first tyres fitted to front 5/6 mnths back and new tyres fitted to back this wkend gone then prop failed so can i expect more issues to follow we supose to be going over to france towing caravan soon my confidence is now at all time low as you have slightly confused me thinking that rest of it imminent to fail now ??

I've can sympathise completely, just had 2 new tyres fitted (newest now on the rear!), new rear fuel pump, replaced the VCU bearings and now about to replace the rear diff as its now making loud whining noises (not the missus in the back seat!!) - all this in the space of a few months, just makes me wonder what next??:confused:

Not being funny Chris, but tyres are a wear and tear item. Batteries are lifed. Alternators - fair enough. Part of the cost of owning a car.

What I'm saying is that having to replace lifed or wear and tear components (tyres/brakes/belts/plugs/etc) should not lead you to consider the car as unreliable...

Fair enough, VCU or IRD failure is unfortunate, but if it's been caused by the incorrect fitting of tyres, then it's premature failure caused by the fitters not following manufacturer's guidelines, and again, not a reliability issue.
 
i agree with the wear en tear ur hair out bit wish id joined forum long ago id never read any where that changing front tyres only would/ could damage all the drive train surly that a realy bad design fault that has never been aired correctly from landrover so to warn owners so as to correctly change tyres as you guys discribe. we like our landy so we will persivear and hope it takes us on our hols to france en back soon:cool: think soon get my 2.8 capri back on road she aint cost me much over years and still starts every time turn key

Did you read the owner manual , there probably mentioned I there Some where.

Was the Freelander design for hard off road use, or the tar mac wet and slipery road. When you take something and us it different than design, then you have to play and pay. Should off got a defender for true off road experience.
