Sounds like you've had a bit of a scare but it's probably OK. The coolant had probably never been changed hence the brown colour, most cars I buy are like that. It also sounds like the thermostat is gone so the mod is a cheap relatively easy way to fix it, with a dodgy thermostat the temp gauge will only get to 1/4 or 1/3 the way up. (It should sit at half way when correct)Thanks, i will get one ordered up. Now This will sound like a silly question. What size Jubilee clips will i need? I'm guessing 45mm-60mm?
Also I have decided while I am at it I am going to do the EGR bypass/blanking as well. I have seen loads of them on ebay for sale.
Are there any that i should stay away from or any recommended?

I hope you used OAT coolant (pink) as mixing with the blue stuff could cause blockages. I'm not sure how you were draining it before but I usually go for the lower hose on the rad, as Nodge says drain it a couple of times before putting coolant in to get rid of the dishwasher tablet. Also not sure about the circlip size but take a few measurements and any car parts supplier will sort you out for a few pence.
I soak it in heating oil (Kerosene) overnight. Then scrape out the goop that is left. I then rinse it out with petrol to dry it off. Sometimes a blast from the pressure washer is needed, before the petrol drying stage. The inlet ports of the head will need cleaning out too. What has everyone found to be best to clean the inlet manifold when I do the egr bypass/blank?
