Was in London,moved to Prague 5 years ago :) took car with me - in the process of having it transferred on to Czech registration now to stop me having to go to UK every year to do MOT :-D

Ok, will probably try and drive it over tomorrow afternoon in quiet traffic.

Hope the power steering / charging doesn't give out for a while like when i was parking it up when the noise got worst :D:D all i need is for the Land Rover Deity to let me get to the garage without the thing falling apart totally :p
 
So, its at the indie, managed to drive it there. The report back is that it was:

1 x Crankshaft Pulley
2 x new Belts
1 x Tensioner

However, the indie claims the crankshaft pulley is about 9000CZK original (300pounds) - and that he's managed to source a replacement at 5500CZK (195 pounds) is that right?? I seem to recall someone saying the crankshaft pulley was about 100 pounds.

Is it this i'm after? Famous Four - Part Information for FF006046

Cheers for the advice - total repair will be approx 12000CZK = 425 pounds
I thought it would be / should be about...9000CZK - 300GBP

What do you think?
 
Try showing him the link and say if he comes down £50/75 then you will have the job done.
Going by the link you provided it shows £109 + vat and probably delivery so he is not making that much from the parts. The cheapest new one delivered to the UK is £99 on fleebay and the timing kit is around £50. I don't know how long it would take to do so ask him what he thinks and how much per hour.I would say he's charging you around £200 for parts and the rest in labour costs.

thanks, glad to hear it sounds at least a little reasonable - emailed the chap the link, his reply was that he as no problem with me ordering it myself and him just fitting it. Also said that when he factors in to the price VAT, carriage, and his small mark up, etc then the price is basically the same. Mentioned that he thought the part mignt not be best quality and really if i do it with his part i have full warranty on parts and work.

He charhed 500CZK per hour = 17pounds, which a great rate. probably + VAT (so 600)

Will probably give him the go ahead.

All in I reckon you're good to go with your mechanic -
I've always thought supplying parts to them to fit is a bit of an insult
(depending on price obviously)
I think I was up near £300 just for the genuine pully+labour+VAT

and you'll get a full warranty off him rather than an argument over who's responsible.
 
Right, got the car back - amazingly quiet and running very smoothly - so quite happy.

Just a bit miffed that when i specifically asked the chap at the garage if he changed the crankshaft pulley bolt for a new one, he said no, they didn't have one / didn't arrive and that in his LR manual it does not state that a new bolt HAS to be used - claims he checked the old one and tightened as it should be. Is this going to hold ok? :)

Obviously i have a warranty with him for the work, so i guess if it does fall off he has to fix it.

----- Edit - been trawling the web regarding this a bit, seems some people (other cars and hippos) replace, some use the same one....not sure what damage would be done if the pulley fell off or was loose.

I've just bought one from ebay for £99 - a geniune LR pully/bolt - £266.

Whats you mileage by the way? Mines gone at 92K
 
mine is on 120k miles.

Will you be replacing the bolt?

-- Will be interested to see what the others say about the old bolt being used - not sure i'd have much success getting him to replace the bolt now that its all done :-D

--- Ok, got fed up and called some Land Rover places in the UK - all said the same thing - the bolt can be reused, usually they only do so twice (so original factory fitting, then one pulley change with same bolt, then on next change change the bolt) - feeling happier now.
