Hi everyone.

I've just picked up my first Range Rover. A 1993 3.9 Vogue SE.

It's a bit of a hound but was cheap and I plan to fettle back to life.

My first problem is that the rear tailgate glass doesn't seem to shut and lock properly. Whether it's locked or not you can yank it open.

Is this a common fault that's fixable or do I need a new tailgate?

I'm sure there'll be a long, long list of niggles as daylight rears its cruel tomorrow

First impression though, I love it and plan to keep it for a long while as a daily driver and to pull my other car around to trackdays and races.

Just thought of two other problems already.

The odometer doesn't work and the fuel guage is wildly out. I filled it up with just over £40 from indicated empty and the guage says it's only just over 1/2 full.

All pointers appreciated.

You've got a Rangie and you're looking at the FUEL?
Welcome to the forum, anyway.
Best you bung a similar question in the Rangie section (you know, the posh bit. They won't let us in there with our wellies on)

My mate Mick lives in 'Arlow. He's got a very tidy Series 2 with all sorts of radio equipment in the back. I'm at the other end of the county - Britain's oldest town.

I know the old town very well. I lived there for 10 years before coming London bound and ending upin 'arlow town.

rangie tailgates have always been a **** to open and close. as for the fuel gauge, 40quid is about half a tank. welcome to the pocket emptying club

Tried again the next time the fuel light came on (the next day) and that time managed to get nearly £70 in. That should keep me going for about 220 miles if I take it steady.

I took to the tailgate with a screwdriver, then with hammer and it now opens and closes

I think I'm learning they way after three days of ownership - a hammer will be the most used tool

I now need to find out what all the buttons do (or used to do) as I don't have an owners handbook.

Is the handbook downloadable anywhere?

I have a switch that looks like a motorway sign that lights up (and does nothing) when pressed, plus two switches on the steering wheel.

Think I'll be spending a while on fleabay buying bits to get everything working again.

I suspected as much. How should it work?

I got the car up to 75mph, pressed the button, the switch lit up. Then I let off the throttle and the car slowed down.

I pressume that means it's buggered???

Just read something about a vacuum in the engine bay that's prone to leaking, so I'll check that next weekend.

I find this is normal on all the vehicles I've had.

lol, me too, but I thought cruise control allowed me to let go of everything and have a nap

Nah - what you need is a hand-throttle, as seen in military LRs

Being a pauper I've never had a car with cruise control, so have no idea how to operate, if it even works on my old tank.
I also got no handbook with the car, so no help here either.
It's not something I have a burning desire to use, but I do want to know if it works.
So, does anyone know how it operates?

I havent a clue mate. The only cruise control I've ever known was a screw under the throttle of old motorbikes which acted as a friction damper and locked the throttle open!!!

Try posting on the rangerover bit further down the page.
