Why is nothing straight forward?!

I've just built a new 300tdi engine and fitted it in my defender along with new engine and gearbox mounts. Everything is new, but it has a vibration from startup at tickover right through (but less noticeable) the revs. It shakes the engine and vibrates anything that can make a noise in the cab.

I thought it might be due to new engine mounts being a bit firm, but I'm not sure it is now. After some investigation it sounds/feels more like when you crack an injector off to bleed it, but not as bad. I have cracked them all one at a time but it acts as you'd expect and gives no extra clues.

I replaced the injector copper washers when I took them out, and have nipped the clamp nuts up a bit tighter just incase they weren't seated properly.

Before anyone says - its not uj's or any part of the driveline as it does it when stationary, in neutral, parked up.

It seems to drive really well, but doesn't feel as powerfull as I was expecting compared to the other engine which had done 210k miles, the acceleration/turbo is more progressive than the old one, which had a definate boost as the turbo came to life, but that could just be because it was old and tired.

Any suggestions??

I put a new timing kit on and timed it to the manual, but I'm open to suggestions

I would double check the timing that you can check in the vehicle.

FIP pin, timing marks on front cover and the flywheel housing timing slot. Just to make sure nothing has magically moved.

Cheers

I checked it five times when I fitted it... but I'll do it again. Could it need advancing/retarding?

One thing I did notice was the tickover was a little high. I don't recal noticing it when I drove the disco befor removing the engine. The fip was removed when I did the build, but not touched in any way and refitted exaclty as I took it off.

timing is the most likely cause, but it might be worth popping the rocker cover off and making sure all the rockers are rocking properly, and consistently...... one might have come loose....

Rarely, it might be an injector blocked / partly blocked / damaged whilst refitting.... but still think timing most likely

The more I look for answers on the interwebs, the more I'm thinking it is timing too.

How should I go about fine tuning it and which way would I need to turn the pump to advance or retard it?

It is all written about in the Rave manual iirc. I think it is in the overhaul section.

Maybe worth sitting down and having a wee read of it.

Cheers

Some engine mounts are much harder than others. I had a similar issue with my 2.5na, softer (genuine) mounts made a big difference.

I rechecked the timing, advanced it slightly and it puffing white smoke under throttle but with no noticable change in vibration, so I put it back to how it was.

Maybe a bad injector?

I don't know a lot about this yet as I will be doing mine for the first time this weekend. Something I remember being told when I started my engine rebuild was not to remove the FIP from the timing belt case. If you do you need to set the 'static' timing. @Saint.V8 told me that IIRC. You might have already done that

My engine was running 'lumpy' at start up before the engine carped. Shook about a bit, but stopped after a few minutes to warm up. When I took the head of No4 injector hadn't been working properly and the piston top was starting to melt.

It was a combination of myself, @Disco1BFG , @jamesmartin and @neilly I think that made comment on the FIP....

As long as the centre boss that is held on with the 24mm(?) nut is not removed off the taper shaft, then static timing should not alter. To remove the pulley, you undo the 3 adjustment bolts and take the pulley off.

I have not taken an FIP off the timing cover, so I am not sure you need to remove the boss or not....but if the boss has been removed, then static timing will need to be reset.

If it hasn't been removed, then timing the pump, cam and crank up is simple pimple.

Sorry, mate. I'm getting worried about my memory  Or, is it my age I'm worried about? I can't remember o_O

In keeping with my recent 'religous' theme:

Matthew 6:25-34
25
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Not just his memory, minds gone altogether  ;) :p

Interesting o_O Maybe Saint's memory is on the flicker ;)
In all probability.....long story - short: 14 years old, charging battery's in a model boat, boat exploded in my face and threw me back 15 feet onto concrete, banged head, blood from ear, now have difficulty with short term memory and sequential recall, its called Ante-retrograde Amnesia.....my brain has difficulty converting the recent short term memory into long term memory....

So, yes, I probably don't remember who it was exactly, but I do remember it was mentioned!
