So following on my quest with my V8, I would like to convert to EFI, but garages are not keen (i do have a kind offer of help from marccleave but he has a lot on his hands with his own project ;) ), a new edlebrock carb with auto choke might solve my wife not driving issue.. Anyone done this, good or bad over EFI??
 
From what I understand the edelbrock carb and manifold is easy to set up and only needs a throttle cable attaching to it. It costs a fair bit though. Alternatively the efi conversion is a fair bit cheaper but will require a lot more time investing in it to get it to work.
What is your current set up?
 
Hotwire Efi is easy bolt on job

Only one wiring plug to connect to the rest of the car, in tank pump to organise, and speedo cable change to speed sensor type

Precat systems are simpler, something out of a 3.5 disco would be ideal
 
Is it really that simple? One the tank side I dont have the in tank fuel pump its already been replaced with an external one, what tools do I need to remove and fit the replacement plenum, is the air box any different..
 
The whole inlet system is different everything from the heads upwards

Throttle cable aswell perhaps

In tank pump is easiest way, OEM is simple and fits

And yes the hotwire system has one plug where it joins the main vehicle loom, so it would be easy to connect it from there using your own method
 
if you asking...

then for looks i would go carb, but expensive and will still need setting up/tuning..but if not capable/confident in reading crt diagrams and some elecy fault finding then proberly a better bet.?

but if going for mpg and performance then efi..

if you can read a diagram to know where to plug things in then efi is simple..but time consuming

a brief list.(I MAY FORGET SOMETHING!)

replace manifold (as you would carb )
bolt on efi manifold with all injectors .tb maf..(all bolt on..all easy IF YOU BUY COMPLETE SYSTEM)
either install injection fuel pump where your low pressure pump is OR install efi fuel tank (pump is in tank) if later will need to extend fp wiring to fit.
either way REPLACE fuel lines from pump to efi manifold with quality injection fuel line.(ie able to take pressure.
install fuel filter (high pressure)
with the wiring...basicaly it just plugs into loom, or splices in if too old..mount ecu under seat, connect to efi loom, 2 or 3 relays..ie fp.etc..bobs your uncle..

it will not need tuning after..BUT it does rely upon you knowing how to read crt diagrams etc..its all on RAVE...ITS worth doing as LR wouldnt have done if it wernt.
 
So I think it will all depend if I can find a complete system, rather than trying to assemble myself, that way all the bits are there..
 
I don't have speed sensor connected but it is a manual box. Just main live, ignition live to pump, earths to connect and coil neg connection. Still quite a bit more work than the carb option. + easy to retune a carb if you fancy dropping say a 3.9/4.6 in one day. Efi would need chipping or appropriate ecu

I would vote carb but only because I find injection systems a bit complex for diy. Could be just me. Have you considered running a weber carb? Dont go american carb route if you can help it. I dont know if people have a fix now but 390cfm holleys were always too big for a 3.5rv8. Edelbrock may be same?
Rebuilt su carbs will run well.
 
What is wrong with the strombergs?
My 3.5 runs fine on its su carbs, but I rarely run on petrol.
If I was to run solely on petrol I think I'd be looking at edelbrock, only one carb to set up and if the hype is to be believed, better performance and economy.
Is this only because your wife doesn't like a manual choke? Cheapest solution could be a bit of choke confidence training? I mean if I can use one then anybody can!!
 
Its the choke, TBH it is a bit of a pain, as you have to know how to pull out to start then remember to put back in, but not too much or it will stall at a junction etc etc, thats why she does not want todo it.
All comes down to the last time she took it out, choke in too early, stalled at a junction then could not start again, as forgot to pull the choke out....

Have you got a supplier in mind over here?

I goto NY seven or eight times a year, so i would probably just pick one up in the USA if they are a lot cheaper :)

I know it's a bit off-topic but your answer reminds me of the transport fitter I worked with back in the 'eighties. He owned an classic Chevy & on one of his trips to the 'states he purchased a complete exhaust system, asked the seller for a hack-saw & proceeded to cut the pipes into short lengths, in order to be able to get the system home on the 'plane! Being a proficient welder he simply welded it all back together in the workshop back in the UK. He said that the 'Yank's face was a picture as he started to saw up a brand new exhaust system :lol:
