hi all..

i aint got a garage so end up using my drive for repairs...

it used to be garden but i ripped out a bit of hedge and removed some grass and laid down some "crusher run" as a temporary base..

its now time to cover that muck up..

was gonna go for slate chippings but as i fix my disco on there (and have found to my annoyance) its nearly impossible to find anything ya drop i.e. screws, nuts and bolts on a loose surface..

so what surface should i go for?

tarmac?
concrete?
flagged?

which is the safest when it comes to jacking up my disco to work on it?

what thickness of tarmac would i need as opposed to concrete to stop axle stands sinking?

this is all relevant as i'm gonna have to dig out the stuff thats there if i need a greater thickness of surface material..

anyone round leeds way wanna gimme a quote.

weve got a gravel over quarry waste drive.... i use a 10 x 8 foot tarpauline and or large flattened boxes... oil spills on the gravel are easily disposed off. trolley jack runs ok on the cardboard and the axle stands settle firmly through the gravel onto the quarry waste.

cheers for that ricc...

no issues wiv loosin bits if ya put somethin down... i've got an old piece of carpet but stuff usually falls just off the edge of it...

what depth ya got of quarry waste and gravel.. is it sinkin where ya wheels drive over it?

dig the area you want out to a depth of 6 - 8" deep put wooden boards around edge of hole if its crumblind in , get a section of metal reinforcing mesh from your local builders merchant suspend that halfway up the hole on wooden pegs, get a concrete lorry round with ready mixed or some of them turn up and mix it on site, then just tap it flat with a long peace of wood from one side to the other , wont cost a lot and will last ages , got to be the safest for jacking up on...

4" concrete is all you need for a work pad, 8" concrete is for heavy trucks 30-40kLBS

concrete would be strongest nick. axle stands tend to sink into tarmac unless you put them on a board to spread weight.

how big an area is it nick?

Properly poured 5 bag concrete at 4" thick will hold 3500-4000 psi. More than enough to hold up your land rover on jack stands. The material under the concrete is more important/ no grass, sod,top soil, only clean sand and properly compacted or crushed stone.
and this is for freezing soil in the winter.

you could still snap a corner with one jack at 4" depth its only a small rectangle of concrete in a mud lawn its not a lorry yard for the extra cost id do at least 62 its got no suport around edges , do it proper do it once,

or by the sound of it you could wait till john gets his pikey wagon over here he will do it for a grand price......

You guys cheap on parts for your land rover but over do concrete? just dig the edges to 6'' the rest 4'' and use 6'' wire mesh.

hmmm... dont think r lass too keen on the concrete option...

anyone got the printed/embossed concrete?

is that any good?

seen odd ones and looks a bit smooth. is it slippy stuff?

Tarmac wont last no where near as long as concrete. Why don't ya slab it? Slabbed driveways look ok, not too pricey either.
