well decided to bite the bullet and go ahead and buy a '92 200tdi..
exhaust is blowing, front shocks are fooked, bodywork in surpisingly good nick. got it for 200 quid-the guy threw in 2 brand new shocks springs turrets and rings, new exhaust,2 alloys with new tyres and a couple of part worns.only problem seems to be selecting 1st and second, particularly on the downshift, have read a few threads on here about sticking clutches,i beleive the landy was lying up for a few months-could this be my problem, the guy said he had fitted a recon gearbox 8 months ago,and he seemed pretty gen, so im hoping it is this and not a goosed gearbox!!
any help apreciated !

when you say 'problems getting into first and reverse', do you mean grinding, hard to get into gear, or gears vannishing?

Hi ratty, seems to happen most when coming down gears quickly for round a bouts ect,it hust totaly refuses to select 2nd or 1st,crunching 'orribly!! have to let the revs totaly drop ,declutch a couple of times reselect gear and of it goes..people were loving me throwin up roadblocks on the middle of roundabouts yesterday :D

Try changing the oil for MTF94. A rebuild LT77 can give bulky changes until slightly worn in.

Also check the 'bias plate' adjustment.....altho this usually affects 3rd and 4th gear shifts.

ok, a wee bit more info...as i have been driving it for a few days now im more inclined to think its the clutch. it definately seems rev related, and when sometimes at idle theres a slight rythmical "rattle" that dissapears when the clutch is depressed.any ideas folks?

With the engine at idle can you press the clutch down and select first gear without a crunch? Try again with reverse, same answer?

If no then there is a chance the clutch is not 'clearing' i.e. needs bleeding, problems with master/slave cylinders, pipe/damper issues, pressure plate, clutch plate or thrust bearing, weak clutch fork (distorting or wearing through).

If selection is ok i.e. no baulking ect then whilst in gear lift the clutch slightly and see how far up the pedal comes before the clutch starts to engage, if it is just a few mm or so then refer to above. If the clutch comes up about an inch or more before engagement then the clutch would appear to be clearing ok, which may indicate you have gearbox issues.

As mentioned before this gearbox can be a bit baulky moreso when coming down into second, you have to slow it right down before selecting. On occasions you may find you cannot select first from a standstill so just let the clutch up and have another go.

The bias plate mentioned earlier is easy to check, just push down the clutch and with no left or right pressure push the gear lever forward and it should select third, agan with no bias left and right from yourself pull the lever straight back and fourt should be selected, if it does anything but exactly that the it needs adjusting.

FWIW 2nd gear selection on my 200 can catch me out if I am not paying attention or try to select it in a hurry, other thsan that the gearboxx is perfect and see's off road and competition work most weekends without issues.

Hope that helps

regards

Dave

Hi Dave, thanks for the detailed reply:)
gear selection from standstill can be a bit vague at times, tho im not sure if this is just me cos im not used to it(just came from an e36 325i with short throw)1st -reverse can be mistakenly selected, but sometimes you have to push right past. also when moving off there is a quiet (clunk) as gearing engages.-second as you say will select without crunching 9/10 as long as you doing no more than 5 mph or so,rest of gearing seems fine. so i guess this pretty normal with the lt77's then?

I have found LT77 ok sso i would suggest that as you have come from a sourkraut ****box then you may find the disco 200 a bit tractor like.If you loose clutch get a tow home.If you bust ya gbox i can get you another for £150 and again tow home.
I drove a 300 with R380 box.it was god awfull.First to second was a slut and fourth from either direction took a blessing from the gods.
If it aint quite broke drive on as it might just be like that however i would have recovery if i were you.I do.Its an easy fix.If the box was recon i would have put in a new clutch without question so try bleeding it and changeing fluid if your bovvered.

From all that I would say the synchromesh is knackered, it seems a lot of the problems with these gearboxes is the fact they get filled with EP80/90 which whilst this is normal on MOST manual gearboxes the LT77 uses auto transmission fluid!

Worth draining and refilling as mentioned earlier, FWIW the transfer box IS EP 80/90
