So I bought a 91 Discovery I from a colleague who was transferring - 350 euros. Nothing too terribly wrong with it. A/C doesn't work (no charge), sunroofs both leak (obviously), a bit of weepage from the transfer case, and a fair amount of driveline backlash. 150K kM, 3.5L V-8. It has no rust and is a decent 20-footer, with a few battle wounds typical of just about any car here in Athens.

This is the first non-US made vehicle I've ever owned, although I worked for a summer in a repair shop specializing in Jags, so I've been 'round the block a time or two with British vehicles. Surprisingly, I've found no electrical gremlins although the previous owner included a set of jumper cables - "Mandatory," he added solemnly :D

I really wish 4X4s like this were the rule, rather than the exception. Stick shift, lever operated transfer case, good offroad suspension - rather than those ridiculous low profile tires, no ground clearance, and a ****load of useless electronic gimcrackery. In the US, Jeep is about the only vehicle you can buy like this anymore.

Anyway, I really like the visibility (high windshield, low side windows), the short-throw shifter, the ability to select lo-range without also locking the center diff (useful in creeping in traffic), the tough V-8 rumble, and the well-thought gear ratios (although 5th could be taller).

I hate the ****ty (although expensive) aftermarket sound system, and I'm not too fond of the stupid sunroofs, the interior bits that are falling off, the horn button on the end of the turn signal stalk (WTF?!), and the cryptic controls (yeah, us Yanks are used to having controls spelled out as to what they do).

So I've been poking around the forum, and it seems like my kinda place - informal, and plenty of ball-busting back and forth. I downloaded a '95 service manual but it's sadly incomplete - so my question is, where the HELL do the sunroof drain hoses end up draining? They didn't reveal themselves when I was poking around on the underside... and what's the best way to clean 'em out? From the top, or the bottom?
 
AFIK, the drains aren't normally the problem, they leak around the seals between the glass and the roof. My ones leak and both motors are half dead-they will tilt but not open. Why they thought sunroofs on an offroad capable motor with aircon was a good idea i dont know:confused::confused:

I too love the high position and it is the easiest car i've had for reversing due to the mass of windows, gotta love the disco:)
 
First :welcome2: to the Forum and that info on your new disco I'm sure you will sort things out :D and also post a picture or two.

The drain tubes start at each of the front corners of the sun roofs and the front ones go down the A pillar although u can't see the tube exit. The rear drop down by the rear lights and u can see the tube behind the rear valances and mud flaps just look up, is a 10mm tube.

As stated above by davek0974 water should not get to the drains if the seals are ok. There's loads of info on leaking sunroofs in the Forum.
 
Hi and welcome to Landrover Addiction Clinic....As previosly mentioned, do a search for Sunroof Leaks and you will find lots of information and help. The only thing you have to remember with owning a Discovery is......Treat her with love and affection or SHE WILL PULL YOUR PANTS DOWN AND BITE YOU IN THE ASS AND EMPTY YOUR WALLET.
 
Thanks! The frame around the sunroof (manual) has been re-sealed. The gasket that seals to the glass when it's closed has a pretty good gap around its outer perimeter.

If this thing has a catastrophic failure, or starts nickle and diming me (don't know how that translates into Queen's English :scratching_chin:), it's getting abandoned. This is more of a cheap toy to thrash in the hinterlands than to rely upon for transportation. I have a Cadillac CTS for that.

Thanx... "money pit" translates into any vernacular. And by sealing you mean that gap 'tween the gasket that mates with the glass, and the frame?

If you search leaking sun roof-many threads on it.

If you find these don't give you a result, Seal it up with either building silicone or Marine silicone.
Or sikaflex pu adhesive.

What ever is cheapest locally
