Having just bought an 06 plate Disco 3 in early March its spent all but 2 days of the last 2 months in the garage with an electrical fault that even main dealer LR technicians in our area seem not to have the know how to diagnose and fix. To us as new owners of the marque this is most alarming, and not a great introduction, and I wonder if there's anyone out there who has the knowledge, or had a similar experience with their electrics on this model, to help us out?

Forum etiquette dictates that we cant answer your question and must give abuse until you have introduced yourself in the aptly named 'Introduce yourself' forum!

As for me, I've got a proper fender so haven't got any electrics to speak of ;);)

Ps Hi:banana:

yes, well, as an ex Renault owner, we are very used to receiving abuse...bring it on

Now that's the spirit!!
Looks like you might fit in just fine here although it would be nice if you still told us a bit about yourself in the intro section.
As for your problem, all I can do is wish you loads of luck in trying to get it fixed.
Same as you, mine is currently off the road with a starting problem that's escalated into something else...something that no one at the dealership seems to be able to explain to me properly. Loved my old d2 but really starting to consider letting this one go.
All the best to ya..

So what symptoms does it show ?
I banned Froggy cars from my workshop over 20 years ago, thinking I should be banning LR's now...

Thanks, done the intro bit now so I hope that helps. I could go chapter and verse about me but everyone would be asleep in no time flat. I think this one may be going back to dealers we got it from for our money back, as its random electrical stuff that I would normally think points to the PCM but that was changed back in Jan by the previous owner, who then, I am increasingly suspecting, got fed up with it and got shot quick by px'ing for a Nissan Patrol!!

Soon after driving off the central locking cycles (can hear the door locks moving), the interior lights come on and the hazards flash just as if it thinks its been in an accident that would activate the airbags (according to the manual) except, thankfully the airbags do not activate. My wife also had a message come up on the dash saying '#### (too quick to read) failure, system shutting down', which I didn't get on the occasions it happened to me. The fault is random but frequent. It happened every time we drove it after collecting it from the garage we bought it from. Annoyingly, the only time it has driven faultlessly was on the test drive before we bought it!! Sometimes it clears itself, and sometimes I need to switch the eng off then back on and it would clear, but soon return after driving off again.

This sounds very much like a poor connection within the instrument pack - far from unknown on D3's.Sometimes it can be repaired, sometimes needs replacing. The instrument pack is the "Gateway" for all the networks around the car do is very important, bringing together the Lin bus, medium and high speed Can buses and the Most network from distant memory... Cant remember if it runs a K bus too.

Thanks very much for that steer - I don't think that's been looked at yet as the focus has been on potential water ingress, so all the under-body panels are coming off to check for this, though this seemed odd to me (as an ex aero mechanical engineer) given the presumably fit-for-purpose off-road nature of the vehicle - surely it should be better than most in protection against water ingress. I think the 'gateway' aspect sounds likely as the fault is not restricted to just one service, but several, indicating to me at least a common point of failure. Thanks again for the very prompt help - I would like to add that this forum is so much more responsive and helpful than the Renault forum where (many times!) I posted on faults we suffered with our scenic but never got a reply!! :clap2: speaks volumes...........

Not a D3 person so just throwing some suggestions out there for someone who may know.

When you say the central locking cycles is this just an auto lock function (anti hijack) which operates above a certain speed ~10 mph? If so it could be a door lock motor issue as the one on my VW (only comparison I have!) controls the interior light, it also tells the computer the door status (locked / open etc) which is also part of the alarm system (which may be related to the flashing hazards) VW's are prone to dry joints on the door lock micro-switches which can cause confusion (door reported as open but also locked). This can throw a fault code, also on my fender will flash lights if you try to arm the alarm if a door is still open)

Like I say - food for thought?

Hi,

I'm fairly sure you have the infamous cambus network issue

Unfortunately the infamous Cambus network issue is not an easy fix or diagnosis.

The normal approach is to work round all sections of the cambus network isolating and testing each part on it's own (don't ask me how you do this)

It is discussed a bit here: DISCO3.CO.UK - View topic - starting probs

As a fellow D3 owner, i feel your pain - I'm looking at getting a D4 before mine starts having any issues! :)

Thanks very much gents, that's really useful, even if it does sound a nightmare if it turns out to be the Cambus network. I'll keep posting as it progresses.

I am told that my D3 is fixed and coming back on friday after the garage have given it a good thrashing (I think the technical term is thorough road test)to make sure the fault does not re-occur. Don't know yet what the actual cause of the problem was or what has been done to fix it but I will certainly be asking for a blow by blow account on friday. I'll post up what the chaps tell me.

Glad to hear it :) now get out and enjoy your D3 for a bit, their not terrible vehicles :D

If it's been doing it from day one and it still does it then you want a refund as not fit for purpose

If you bought it on finance they're jointly liable so if the garage doesn't play ball it's another avenue to go down for a refund

But they are because mine still refuses to run :(

What is wrong with yours?

Not claiming mine is perfect and problem free, but, even all the way round Morocco the worst i got was the odd suspension error light...
