A few weeks back i posted the following...

Good afternoon all

Joined again after not being a member for a good number of years and could not remember my log in details

Based in Cheshire our first LR was the V6 Freelander, I have joined again as i bought the Mrs an 06 TD4 Freelander Freestyle as a winter hack we had it full serviced and a few things replaced on it straight away and TBH we are pretty impressed by it up to now. I'm still lusting after a Disco 3/4 so may treat myself this spring

Anyway... cheers all

Spring came very early...

Today I bought a un-abused one owner 81k miles D3 2006 S model TDV6 after needing another vehicle for my M6 commute over the next 12 months

Dry stored since 2013 after the original owner passed away, he had a boat load of work carried out and a serious amount of invoices ( no expense spared ) December 31st 2019 full service with zero MOT advisories everything is in order, I was a bit dubious about the drive back from Yorkshire to Cheshire followed by her in the freelander but it NEVER missed a beat and thankfully everything works and it even came with a high value no. plate. Sounds to good to be true but after a mis-spell on eBay after I found it yesterday we bought it after looking at RR Vogues, HSEs etc and other D3's

Anyway time will tell but we'll look after and I look forward to the next 12 months or 19k miles with it ( my commute )

Ta

Cam belts 100k or 7 years, read up on the 2.7 oil pump issues and get it done same time as the belts.

Cheers

I was looking into this last night, I have invoices for belts at 79k but not the oil pump. It’s on my list now to get done in Feb. Just out of curiosity what should I budget?

thanks

Hiya and welcome to the asylum, lol

were the belts done recently plse or some while back, indeed as mentioned the oil pump cover is a must

belts and oil pump ur looking up to a grand , but many pay around £800

if u just need the oil pump, think £4-500 would be a max amount

plus diagnostics with these vehicles are extremely useful

there’s many of us around so don’t ever hesitate to ask and we will always help where we can

Have no idea as mine had already been done, I bought the parts, took the old belt off and saw it was new style pump dated 2012 so was well chuffed.

May I ask a Q.

What is the rear belt for?

Is this engine chain driven or not?

Ta

hiya

the rear belt is for the high pressure fuel pump to the injectors , it isn’t timed on the D3 but is timed on the D4

the camshafts internally are chain driven as there’s 4 x camshafts , but timing belts inc the aux one are all rubber belt driven

Plus pre 2007 EGRs can be blanked off without having to get a software patch update , u leave the egr pipes in situ for the mot and fit blanks and the butterfly valve inside the throttle body

also not forgetting to clean the MAP sensor

plus 1 on the oil pump and buy genuine , as a new engine ur looking a min of £3k

Cheers mate

The EGRs have been blanked, well I know at least one on the LHS has i've spotted this I need to check the RHS

Where's the MAP sensor? ah ok so the rear needs doing as well?

All I want is 12 months commute out of it 350 mile a week on the M6, it'll never go off road with me and TBH there is no rust on it so I don't think it ever has ha

It'll be for sale this time next year with 101k on it with everything done by the time i've finished with it

Cheers all

ur welcome

indeed make sure there both blanked , the map sensor sits on top of the throttle body where the butter fly valve is , but that butterfly should be removed when the egrs are blanked

also as a side note the body doesn’t need to come off to change the rear belt, it can be done in skilled hands under an hour , front belts inc oil pump can be done under 5 x hours

Just mentioned it in case a garage is going to do them and try and pull a fast one with saying the body needs to come off as it doesn’t

hope that helps

I've just had the following Mercs as company cars

GLC coupe AMG prem plus 2.2
GLC coupe AMG prem plus 2.5
GLC 2.2
C class convertible ( ffs )
CLS shooting brake 350
C AMG estate

Paid far to much tax, I now own two LR out of my car allowance ha ha so I need them to work for me, five days ago I was contemplating 120K+ RR and RR sports

I nearly went all out and got an evoque ( too small )

Yes i've always had a soft spot for LR and I think we are all aware of the reliability so im on a prevention mission now ha

It suits my lifestyle as a 2.4 children plus Doberman owner and a unit rugby playing son

no worries , many here to always help :)

is that the cause of the crank issues you hear of? I.e with prep maintenance engine failure is highly unlikely? Don’t mean to hijack but know your the man in the know!! I bought a hilux over a d3 due to fear of engine failure and the fact I thought I’d do more miles. When my d1 is done I would like a d3 for my commuter, especially as I’d be able to get one and have change with hilux value.
