Hello everyone,

I've just bought a 90 Wolf, TUL HS W&W. Always wanted a Defender and this seemed like a good way of getting one! I've had it MOT'd, Licensed etc now just looking to start bringing bits and pieces back to good condition. I had wanted to get it in with a local mechanic but due to this pandemic that may have to wait. I was hoping to do as much as possible myself and looks like I now have no choice but to learn!

My only issue so far is she smokes a lot when started, its white smoke and after she's up to speed and temperature it stops. Any thoughts from the seasoned members?!

The white smoke might suggest the injectors need looking at. It would also be worth getting the Landy serviced. Try some injector cleaner first and decent fuel.

Thanks for the pointer, I've been trawling the internet and that's definitely on my list. I was thinking about changing the fuel filter and injectors myself. Is that what you'd suggest? It was supposed to be going into the garage last week and then all this lockdown started! Bad timing!
 
Try the easy fix first, the injector cleaner and premium diesel. If not, then look at changing them. Definitely replace the fuel filter as part of the service.
 
Nice purchase, love to see pics. As above it’s likely been stood around a lot and obviously waded in salt water, I’d be servicing the fuel system, injector cleaner, premium diesel. Don’t forget it should have a sedimenter in the rear wheel arch.

Another job often done by WW owners is to work your way round replacing all the bolts and fixings. They may likely be corroded, if not on the outside then in the mating faces.

Hi Huddy - and thanks top tips. I hadn't thought about the sedimenter but will investigate later today. I'll take some photos too and stick them on here.
 
Any LR best thing is get familiar with your vehicle and learn to do as much as you can yourself. Only way to be sure it’s done properly. Everyone here will help you

Cheers RangeRoller, I'm enjoying learning on the go but will definitely need help so its much appreciated!!

So one question I have for the floor - I'm following Knappster and Huddy's advice and servicing the fuel system to try and cure this excessive smoking issue. I've ordered a new filters and was going to use the injector cleaner and good diesel through it. The problem I have is with the lockdown I can't just drive about and burn it through. I've watched some vids on removing the injectors and it seems ok - any tips for then cleaning them by hand?

I've also ordered a new oil separator and was planning on adjusting the tappets if anyone has any advice?

I could upload a video of the smoke and also a few with well tuned ears may be able to tell me if the engine sounds ok?

Unfortunately driving it can be the best cure, there’s only so much you can do revving it on your drive. It’s a case of do a few things I.e fuel system, then take it for a drive and see how you do. If it’s still not right you check a few other bits like timing. You also need to consider when the timing belt will have last been done and how long you want to wait before changing it.

I’ve heard others from Brightwells have been reported as smokey but clear up after some regular use.
 
Cheers Huddy - thats good to know! It's sat around a lot I'm sure - even before it got to Brightwells. I've got some tools arriving tomorrow with the Injector cleaner and filters too. If nothing else I'm enjoying getting to know my way around it!
