Hi all,

I introduced myself a while back, but as I have finally got a Defender I thought you may want to see it!

It would seem that talking about Defenders to my amazing wife constantly for the last two months has paid off! To shut me up she went out and bought me one for Christmas :D

Car details:
94000 mile, 300Tdi, P reg hard top that has at some point been converted to a county. The engine seems in great shape to my untrained eye, but I'm getting a mechanic friend to check it over properly today.

Bad points:
  • Diff Lock won't engage - Hopefully nothing WD40 can't sort out
  • A fair few bit's of bodywork need tidying up
  • Handles / locks need sorting
  • Hand Brake is pretty sloppy - wouldn't hold the car alone on our sloping drive

Mod list:
  • EGR Blanking
  • Side Steps (bar type, not flip up type)
  • A bar
  • Sill and back corner checker plate
  • Sound proofing generally

I'm sure I'm gonna post masses of questions on here as I am a genuine novice when it comes to car mechanics, but I am willing to give anything a bash so I'm looking forward to the learning ;)

Thanks in advance guys/ gals

Micro update - Looks like it is going to need about 5 welds on the chasis.

I can already see this is going to be an expensive car!

Good luck with your purchase. A "P" reg 90 is going to need welding unless it's been waxoyled. Get a welder and a workshop manual you are going to need it, alternatively get matey with some other Landy owners who have got the skills.
If you have to take it to a dealer or specialist for everything it's going to get expensive. Bits are cheap labour is not.

:welcome2: to the wonderful world of Land Rovers ... we all have wallets made of sponge on here ... you will too :p

Well......

Just got a quote for the repair work to the chassis, hand brake & stuck diff lock. about £1100 for the lot.

Not as bad as it could have been, but still a pretty hefty whack to the wallet!!

That is a lot of money for chassis repair! The hand brake is a simple DIY and probably only needs adjusting. The diff-lock will probably only need a good clean and lube too. That leaves about £950 for the chassis repair!
What part of the country are you in? If you're West Midlands area my mate who is a superb welder would probably halve that for you

In terms of the chassis repair it will consist of:
New crossmember
New outrigger
Several cut / patches
Footwell repairs
Some bulkhead repairs

Considering the reputation of the company that I'm using, I don't think that the price is tooooooo bad.

Also this is my fist Defender, and also fist vehicle that will require fettling of any kind, so I really want to get a solid base so that I can then start to tinker.

Ok then ... it's your money ;)

£950 is still alot of money.

When my cross member went i hadnt done any welding and didnt feel confident undertaking a critical part such as that.

I bought the cross member, i cut of old one and cleaned up and then paid a friend of a friend £60 to weld it up for me.
While he was underneath welding he stuck two patches on the chassis legs as well which it needed.

You can get the cross member for £80 - £120 depending on make and if it has the extensions or not.

I paid £100 for a Britpart  with extensions so total cost was £160. and i got the patches sorted.

Outrigger i bought for £16 off ebay and welded myself.

Hmm! side steps?

Not going off-roading then?

I'll be honest, I won't be going of-road that much. Just going to be using it mainly for going out mountain biking, and as a driving billboard for my business.

And when I say side steps, I mean the rail type , not the flip down type.
