I thought the 2.4 was the transit engine? I'm not sure where the 2.2 came from but it could be a newer transit engine?
Never driven a 2.2, but I'm pretty happy with my 2.4 with 26k miles. Hasn't missed a beat. Like the 6speed box for motorways etc. can be a bit gutless at times especially low in the revs, but my truck is heavy or towing a heavy trailer. I'd happily have another.
What's the alternitive to a 2.2? Second hand one or something else? Best bet would be go for a test drive
but my local dealer seemed very in interested in selling me a brand new defender for some reason.

2.0; 2.2; & 2.4 versions were available I believe. I have the tddi 2.4 in my Transit, but apart from the injection the engine I believe is basically the same. Can be remapped to 160+bhp.

Puma Defenders have other differences over a Td5. Such as new dash and interior items. Better anti stall, better TCS and some other more subtle changes.
There isn't a huge difference between the 2.4 and 2.2 and almost none with factory maps. In theory the 2.4 should make more when tuned, but we aren't going to be talking much.

I had one for a week. It felt a lot tighter and refined and a lot more comfortable on motorway. Didn't sound as nice though....
Not sure how they compare towing though. Td5 feels like its got more back of the seat power but puma has 6 speed. I never got to tow with the puma
