I've just bought a new Defender 90 XS (having had a couple of much older ones). The standard Land Rover stereo has very poor audio quality, although I realise the noise of the vehicle doesn't help!

Can anybody recommend what speakers will plug-and-play (replace) the existing poor quality and recommend a good head unit that is easy to fit? Ideally I was thinking of getting something with sat nav and Parrot bluetooth (for the mobile phone and iPod integration).

Any input or recommendation greatfully received.
 
I wonder what attracted me (as a div) to this forum guys?! I feel at home here already.

I thought the etiquette with forums was you search first (did that - didn't throw up anything remotely helpful that I could see) and you're polite. In return, the regular users point you in the right direction whilst you find your feet.

I guess I was looking for a helpful reply, such as (at the risk of helping you too much):

"Hi, yes, they're 5" speakers and any standard speaker would work, I recommend Clarion and you can get those for £50 from Halfords. Any head unit will also work but make sure it's got the Doobrie/Thingy connector".

I'll leave you guys to it. Sorry to trouble you.
 
Well there ya go you even answered you own question wasn't that hard was it.

Also you steamed in with your 1st post with a bit of a stupid question so should expect to get a slating, as you couldn't be added to even introduce yourself in the new members section and be advised of the banter on here.

I made up that answer wangie46. If it's right then it's a complete guess. Doobrie/Thingy connector is not a real term.

You've done very little to change the perception of your average Defender driver/owner!

Keep up the good work :)

1 I wasn't trying to change the perception of your average defender driver
2 if you had taken the time to introduce your self properly on here in the correct area you would have been advised to, 1 get a thick skin as this forum is also about having a laugh and a **** take, aswell as getting help for your landy and 2 you would have been well advised not to ask silly questions like what head unit should I get for me landy or what size tyres will fit on my landy

Dooberie thingy is normally the stereo harness and most new stereos will come with the standard fit. I have a kenwood with iPod connection. Easiest job you will do to fit. And tha dash speakers are 10cm. Recommend some component speakers for the rear (any size you want to fit).
 
wangie46, I think we're saying the same thing here. I have no problem with a **** take/laugh and a huge amount of sarcasm. However, it was a polite first post from me asking for input of advice and if there's one thing we all know about forums it's that you have to treat the newbies a bit carefully, if you want to grow the forum and not just have the same 6 or 7 mates who spend all day on here taking the **** out of newbies.

Now, at this point, I still don't have any input on the original question. I was hoping for things like "you'll need to more than just replace the speakers mate, you'll need a bass unit and don't go for anything less than 4 x50w amp" or "go to this website and they'll sell you the exact same size speakers" or "I've tried everything and the Landy is just too noisy for a good stereo, save your money". You get the picture?

Yes, to you guys it might be a ****wit question but to the person posting the question (having been polite and searched first) it's a good question.

Oh, and anybody know what that second smaller gearstick is by the bigger one might be my next post.........

and if that really is going to be your next post then I suggest you sell it.

fill yer boots... they'll have everything you'll ever need.

as for speakers, just replace with a decent brand if it bothers you that much. As long as they're the same size theres no reason why it wouldn't just be a case of plug n play.

So most 10cm speakers will be fine in the front. Should I not just get the same for the rear in order to fit the existing?

Also, the small tweeters on the dash, leave as is or replace?

I'm about to buy the Clarion NZ501E head unit I think.

I just replaced with the front with pioneer but as I have a van I could do what I wanted for rear speakers. Just bear in mind if you like to hear the bass just a little 10 cm all round won't give. Make or get some spacers for the rear and get 17cm components or 6x9s or add a sub if you really like bass.
And Dr Evil is right don't ask that last question cause that will get you gunned down

Money no object but I'm just after something that plugs and plays and doesn't need the car to be carved up or modified. Yes, sat nav, yes Parrot and yes new speakers to replace the existing. As an audiophile the existing Land Rover head unit and speaker combination is unlistenable (too tinny, no weight to it, no volume and only basic iPod integration with 3.5mm cable).
 
DJ Xan, thanks for that input. I guess I'll have to try new speakers in the existing openings and see how much further I need to go.

As for my possible second question about the smaller gearstick, I was testing this line that you guys like a **** take.
 
All right let's get off on a better foot then and before you post another q about what the other lever is for and end up with another slating, it's for your low range and diff lock, as yours is a newer model you should have a hand book somewhere, you should find that if you push it all the way forward that will put your tranny in low range and back towards you high range and over to the passenger side will lock your tranny.
 
As said befor chose a good make, ie pioneer, vibe, jbl somthing along thoes lines, get all the speakers u have and mesure them then get a direct replacement.
The best head units ive had for power n sounds is alpine, but not sure if they do a gps one.
also get a sub + amp combo, probly looking to spend a couple houndred to get somthing decent, it will need a few wires run to it tho, But halfords or similar will fit it all for a small fee.
