The latest from "AutoExpress" New Land Rover Defender DC100 concept revealed | News | Auto Express Suggests it will be 2018 before we see the new defender, whatever it turns out to be. It seems to me that that, will put a definite divide between the old and new, potentially getting rid of the traditional Defender buyer and leaving the new one to appeal to JLRs preferred "lifestyle" customer. I think I'll hang on to my 300tdi for a while longer.
 
Looks good but could it carry those working dings with pride like the landys of the last 67 years?
 
That's old old old. Supposedly been announced that defender production will continue in China or Mexico, just will not be imported into Europe.
 
Amongst the many questions about the new Defender the 'will you build it any better than the old one' must top the list.

Truly appalling build quality and frankly design. Defenders remind me of the old Mini - rusty, no development that did not come from legislation and a contempt for their customers.

Which is why they sell very few Defenders and Mini (Rover Group) went bust.

What is not wanted is another Evoque in overalls though. Time will tell but I do think these preview shots are pretty much the signed off design. The Evoque hardly changed externally from design study to launch car.

So folks get used to it. I quite like the SWB van in green. It would sell.

The new one really needs to be a G Waggen competitor IMO. The Defender is supposedly the best selling LR product in France:eek:
If the new one is as full of stupid electronics as other recent LR products, it will only sell to the school run types.
 
The design of the new defender isn't that relevant to me. I bought my 300Tdi as a vehicle I could learn and tinker with mechanically. Pretty much every other car now has a big shiny plastic cover under the bonnet and nothing I can get to. I think my generation (im 30) have pretty much been excluded for being hobby mechanics. The availability of parts and reasonable prices mean older defenders are an excellent option.

So aside from the fact that the new defender will no doubt start at about £28k it also won't be something I can fix with either a hammer or some gaffer tape.

On a side note I think it looks lovely.

You might as well look at a pic of a tonka toy as they havent got an inkling of what it will be like , its just another exercise in BS

Landrover have form for releasing design exercises that hardly change when they go into production.

I reckon this is what they will make (or pretty much). Where they make it and what it costs is anyone's guess.

Like the Wrangler it evolved and the new Wrangler is a pretty good bit of kit - esp if modded. The Defender will evolve and I suspect we merry band will increasingly look upon the old one like Moggy Minor owners do on their P&J.

Rubbish, I'm 32 and I've worked on modern stuff and old stuff the basics are the same! As long as you have the right diagnostic tools working on modern cars is no different to the Defender! An engine is still an engine. I've done loads with modern VAG stuff. Remove the plastic covers and the guts of a modern engine ain't all that different to your Defender!
 
Do we really need another Land / range Rover that looks The same, who is that going to appeal too ? It looks like a Kia copy :puke:

So apart from the differences it is still the same. Good stuff.

There are two main problems with someone who wants to tinker at home. Accessibility and Electronics. Range Rover Sports need the body lifting off them to replace a turbo, Mercedes spoke about (was mentioned by a dealer, but I can't find anything on the web immediately so it may not be true) locking the engine bay and only they would have the key to it. You could get to dipsticks and filler caps etc but that was it.

I'm sure lots of ingenious people will work out ways round it. It seems to be part of the fun these days, with electronic goods, software, games, cars and the like. Find a way to delve inside sealed for life units, thwart manufacturers' copy protection and variously tweak, modify and improve what you get from the retailer.
 
Well that looks better than the dc100 thing. And the inclusion of a hard top is good as defenders are probbaly more commercials than people carriers. That does look very bling though.
 
If it has solid axles I'll be happy. I have a feeling I wont be. RIP Land Rover once they stop producing a vehicle with them.
