Dunno. I was quoted £170 for new cd player, fitting and the wire to allow dash controls to work! Normal CD players wont let the controls work!

Hi,
I am in the middle of sorting a new head unit and speakers for my disco I know fitting a new unit in the disco can be a pain because if it is not done correctly you will loose the use of the radio controls either side of the binnacle, as far as plugging straight in to your head unit it is very unlikely, but I do know that if you go to your local car audio shop even if you did not buy your radio from them they will help you out for a small fee.

I am getting mine fitted in the morning for £15 but I am spending £335 on my head unit and new leads.

All head units come with different connectors, and so do all cars, what you have to do is to go somewhere like Halfords where they will sell you the correct adaptor for the car. These cost about £10-15. They will however not enable any of the cars dash/stering wheel controls to work with the new stereo.

Oh and one other thing, the conectors may fit together fine but all of the pin outs are different so you may find that the stereo does not recieve power corectly etc, when you turn on the ignition. This is another reason for the adaptors.

You don't say what model you've got. My 300 TDi Disco has standard (ISO) wiring. The third, non-standard plug, goes to the amplifier that drives the boot's (woofer?) speakers.

I have not tried running them off the rear speakers' output from the head unit as I don't want to blow the boot amp. As the shopping doesn't need to listen to 6music I just run the four cabin speakers.

The unit I bought is a standard (ISO) Goodmans DAB/CD one and works fine with the disco's standard amplified antenna .

The 'remote' controls nearer the steering do not work.

Chrisjd: Where did you get your magic wire and what make is your new head unit please?

Hiya

When i replaced head unit in mine (have since returned it to factory one) I could not trace the speaker wires from the loom to the speakers. I think they go through an amp somewhere first.

I ended up running new wire from each speaker and just snipping off the power wires off the loom. could not figure out the wiring to get sub to work. Sounded very sad without boot amp & sub!

I have since put back the original head unit back in.

Hope this helps.
