I have to replace the front pads & discs on my 300tdi disco. Is this an easy job? I am not skilled at all in mechanics and generally just tinker with the odd thing - am I taking on too much by trying to do them myself? If not, are any specific tools required?

No its not that difficult, you will be suprised at how little actually holds the discs on.

Knock the pads about gently with a hammer then they will pry out, don't be scared if you need to apply a bit of lever action against the disc.

When you reaasemble them, put a good layer of copper grease on the back of the pad where the caliper touches it.

Not that simple neither. The discs are fitted on the rear of the hub, so you have to remove the pads, remove the braking assembly (two torx) making sure you tie them up to support the pipes and then remove the hub. You will require a 52mm box spanner or socket to do this. Once the hub is off, you then have to seperate the disc from the hub - 5 torx as I remember and you will need a short extension bar. A tip is to replace the hub temporarily back onto the wheel and lay the wheel on concrete. This will stop the hub from trying to turn when getting the disc torx retaining bolts undone and retightened when refitting using loctite. Also, if you bought a kit you should have new rear seals for the two hubs? If not, get them. Just done mine - it wasn't that difficult but if you're not sure, best leave to someone who knows what they are doing as the end float of the hub bearings have to be set when refitting main nut and lock nut. Took me 3 hours so I would imagine that someone whose done it before would be able to cut this time down somewhat. One good thing about this set up is that you get to repack the hub bearings with grease Good luck.
