I'm new here so i do apologies if i am posting in the wrong area. This morning my 2000 TD5 defender sucked up water mid river crossing. As i was in the water it started to misfire, bog down and pour out tones of white / blue smoke. I manage to limp out of the river and home, i took the air filter out which was soaking wet and ripped.

I replaced the filter and dried out the airbox and took the truck for a test and all seemed well until i put my foot down and began boosting hard and then it started to over heat. It seems ok-ish at normal speeds but if you put it under load the temp goes right up.

It never used to over heat at all, never even get halfway up the gauge. it's stage 2 remapped and still goes like hell just gets hot.

Does anyone have any ideas? I have taken the intercooler off which didn't seem to have water in but there was evidence some had gone into the intake manifold.

Any suggestions appricated

I don't know Td5 that well, but sucking in water is never good for engines.
My best suggestion would be not to drive through rivers, it isn't a boat.

Sounds like either your intercooler is full of water or worst case it's gone in the engine.DO NOT run it any more until you find out and thoroughly clean/ dry it out you will blow it up!
 
Intercooler wasn't full of water although there is evidence some had gone into the intake manifold. It has done a fair few miles today after this happened it just been getting hot under any strain.

Just seems really strange to have developed an overheating problem. I would guess at the fact i've blown the head gasket with the excess pressure of having water in the cylinders

Lucky if it hasn't bent a Conrod or broken something else ,don't run it it WILL blow

Could be HG, could be worse damage, water does not compress easily like air.

Try posting in Defender section like I said, it will get more attention in there.
 
I think i have posted in the defender section although i am not sure. If it had bent a conrod or valve i would expect it not to be running or to be down on power and its still as powerful as it was

Conrod, cracked head, etc. will not affect power output much. The reason there is no water in intercooler is that it has been sucked into the engine already, and then dried out by the airflow.
 
would a bent conrod cause over heating? i cant see how myself. surely the headgasket would let go before the head would crack? i did think the HG was beginning to let go before today so i am not too upset by it haha!

As I said, I am not that familiar with Td5. But I do know that an engine can be written of by hydraulic action due to water being sucked in.
Give it time, someone will probably reply to your thread in the Defender section.
