Hi all my Hippos broken down again after running fine for a good few months...So im on the hunt for a new alternator...

My origional is a Valeo YLE102500 14v 50/115 Amp, Im looking foir an uprated one prefebably a 150 amp one, does anyone know of one? They only seem to have the 100 amp ones for my 2001 TD4 2002 onwards they are 150 Amp but with the different connector..

This is I belive the specs for my Valeo, but from the Lucas website as the valeo one is crap:
http://www.lucasee.com/en/shop/product/LRB00470
and this is a 150 Amp I belive would fit?... maybe?
http://www.lucasee.com/en/shop/product/LRA02076

the only difference in the measurements is B,C, and J the pully size, all 1mm different? will this make a difference?

Hi Jedi,

Unless someone on here's done this specific upgrade, it may be just a case of test-fitting a 150A unit, and returning if no good.

On the other hand, alternators are expensive. When ours went, I bought a rebuild kit from westronicsirl on eBay. They have a Youtube channel with vids telling you how to fit the kit as well. For about £20, I got bearings, brushes and everything else needed to recondition our alternator. Worth a thought.

I did think about trying to repair it, but its 16 years old, looks like its the origional from 2000, and it started to smoke/burn with a horrible electronic smell, my battery light finally came on...
It may just be the brushes as they do look very short, but could these have caused the smoking/burning smell...also the windings look like they have gotten hot, looks like the insulation has melted off in parts. I think I need a new uprated one:), all newer hippos have 150 amp my 2001 is rated at 115 amp....

I have heated everthing and auto box, so some extra amperage might imporve things.. will have to see if my local auto factors can dig some out so I can compare sizes etc...

The main phase windings are pretty indestructible. The burning smell is most likely from a failed regulator/rectifier hence brushes, as you say, or a blown diode.

At a guess, I would say it's unlikely they significantly altered the mounting/pulley set-up just to uprate the alternator. My wife used to have a Peugeot 306 that was a nightmare for parts - every single one had a variant option so I ended up establishing an understanding with my parts shop - I would take both options home, fit the correct one and return the wrong one for a refund.

If the alternator has just two wires then in theory it should be just a case of fitting the correct connections to the wires. However many modern alternators now have output feedback to the engine ECU. This is used by the engine ECU to increase idling speed when electrical loads are high maintaining alternator output. I don't think a slight difference in pulley size will matter as long as the belt tension can be maintained.

Im pretty sure the smell is coming from the windings, as opposed to the diode/regulator pack...It stank a whole car park out yesterday, I wasnt sure if it was the car or someone burning rubbish that caused the smell...

Im finding it hard to find the 115 amp alternator, I belive from what ive read its been updated to 120 amp, which also is not that easy to find. I need the 15 61E square connector too, unless I can just swap the connector engine side and fit a later 2003 150 AMP alt?????

@ Nodge yes it has 2 connectors..it shows 3 on the alternator but only 2 connected engine side.
Also im wondering why they uprated the alt to 150 amp? was it the heated front screen, which i dont have on my 2001 model? are there other goodies later models have that I dont?

Heres some pic of the windings what do you think???

Having seen the pics, I agree the windings are burnt, and it's time for a new alternator. My 03MY FL has the 150amp alternator, and it has two connectors:
1. Heavy cable to battery +ve
2. A weatherpack connector with two links, one via the charge warning light to battery +ve (exciter wire), and a second marked DFM (iirc) which stands for digital field monitor. The latter, as Nodge suggests, sends load info to the ECU.

The exciter wire should have 12V with the key on. You can then assume the other is the DFM. If you wish to swap in a 150 amp alternator, this should help you wire it in.

Im just wondering about the dimensions? will they be the same with the bigger 150A Alt?. Will the 150A Alt pully be inline with all the other pullys on fitting?

Im hoping so, and hopefully I can find the connector too.

Im tempted to go with this:
http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/B...26f1206c422a34c645db26141c74dc0bad3d17&000012

which Im presuming is this:
http://www.lucasee.com/en/shop/product/LRA02076

Only difference I can see is the pully size is smaller by 1mm ( will this make it spin faster?) and some of the fittings are off by 1mm, whether this makes a difference I do not know? I hope 1mm difference wont throw the drive belt?

Or get the later 2002> Freelander 150A Alt but have to change the connector and hope it works?
http://www.lucasee.com/en/shop/product/LRA03078

But dimension I is totally different, so may phyically not fit?? and the pully size is 50mm as opposed to 54mm on the origional.

It would work but my origional is 115Amp...I wanted more not less :D

I might just end up sticking a 100 amp one in if I can find and alternative...:(

I assume you have a Td4. I doubt that Land Rover upgraded the alternator and made BMW change the mount setup, so you should be okay. A smaller pulley will run faster, but the alternator will be calibrated to this and the auto tensioner should take up any slack.

I have a spare 150 amp alternator connector if you want one. I'm not sure where exactly it is - somewhere in my parts bin - so I'll have to search a bit.

All sorted now I got the Lucas 150amp one from eurocarparts in my link above, which was the LRA02076. Straight swap fits great and has the correct plug so no messing about..

Thanks for all the help...

Cool, there are plenty of threads on Freelander and Rover 75 forums asking this question, but none have ever confirmed it fits and does the job. Thanks for updating us

Couldn't find them on eBay?

go on youtube it shows you exactly how to
repair the brushes & other parts,i got a set
off of e-bay as well,about 20 quid.
