Retired - Living the dream
Currently in the process of renewing both rear air springs on my Discovery II.
Got the old offside bag off ok but could not get the new bag to inflate.
Checked the air pipe connection and seated properly.
Didnt want to do the other side until the offside working properly.

After trying all the variations to fool the compressor into working (with no success).

Removed the compressor - tried it straight from the battery and its working fine.

Refitted the compressor and tried to start the motor and hey presto get all the dash lights functioning correctly but now the Disco wont start, clicks only.

Any advice re the non starting and also re the inflation of the airbag.

(replacement Dunlop airbags)
Thanks

Give a good charge to the battery first...the click might be the starter solenoid, u need a repair kit( a powerfull battery oftenly helps cos it pulls harder the plunger and it starts)

About the SLS...
1. did you disconnect the battery before u worked on the bag?
2. try again and make sure all doors and taildoor are well closed

if no joy we'll speak again...dont be affraid, the SLS is one of the easyest to fix on a D2

Update

Car starts on the button - unknown to me, my helper swapped two relays under the bonnet (5 - SLS and 3 - headlamp wash) I've put them back and now the Disco starts.

I didn't disconnect the battery before starting.

All doors shut tight and nothing, the compressor doesn't sound as if its powering up.

I have Hawkeye version 5 but a novice with it I'm afraid.

Check fusible link FL9 in the engine bay

After trying all the variations to fool the compressor

did u try to jack up the back to 3/4 of the normal height too and push ORM too?

Plug in hawkeye and read the SLS part of the SLABS ECU for codes first ... if no codes, there is a circuit test menu and u can run circuit tests for compressor and valves... just access the proper menu and hawkeye will guide you through

Fusible Link ok

Hawkeye tests carried out - wouldn't inflate either side

Nagging doubt over the relay, I replaced the relay for the SLS and hey presto compressor kicked into life.

Hawkeye can now adjust the height.

Any idea what the reading should be for the height at normal level. The passenger side was showing 164 and I have set the drivers side to this

Now for the passenger side.

Sierra thanks for your help once again.

Going to disconnect the battery this time.

Hopefully take less than the 8 hours it took to do the drivers side!!

I think that the problem all along with the suspension has been the relay, I decided to change the bags as they were the original ones lasted 12 years so it was only a matter of time.

U can inflate them with hawkeye but the ecu will not store the heights... not disconnecting the battery before u worked on the spring might have disturbed the calibration... start the engine without hawkeye plugged and see how is the level on it's own...if it's not even u need nanocom or T4 to calibrate(unfortunaltely one of hawkeye's deficiencys)

ignore the numbers that Hawkeye give for the sensor height reading, they are just a referance point for the ecu to read. once ride height set and calibrated the ecu will store the senor reading and return the height to them as needed.
(i wrongly presumed the number should be a set figure too, but it's not. things you learn messing with your disco :D )

one thing to check is the sensor arm bolt. make sure the senor arm can freely turn. they seize up and alter the ride height reading.

All sorted and sitting with a beer

20 mins to do the passenger side bag.

The height seems the same on both sides so think I've got away without
re-calibration.

I'll check it in the morning but confident its fine and dandy.

Once again Sierra thank you.

I have a similar problem.
I fitted a new balloon and got it inflated by adjusting the distance between the wheel and chassis and activating the off road ride height to get both sides pumped up. I went for a test drive and the suspension stayed up despite my doing over the 18kph, i stopped and pressed the ride height again and the balloon i had installed has deflated although the other side (passenger) stayed at the max height.
So i am with a new ballon on the drivers side dweflated and the old balloon on the passenger side inflated to max and no warning lights showing, anyone got any ideas as i am now stuck and i don't have any diagnostic tools.

Sounds like a height sensor fault on the passenger side
If one bag is fully inflated you might want to pull the fuse and let some air out the bag
Its not unknown for the bag to explode due to over inflation

after a test run with max height staying in place all seems to be OK apart from warning lamp at bottom of dash is illuminated, what a pain discos are with all the electronic crap, if anyone knows how to set up the airbags using RAVE testech method i would appreciate it
