Hi guys, just wondered if anyone can give me some advice.
When i try to start the discovery in a morning, it seems to turn over for a while before it starts, will a set of glow plugs sort this?
Its got 180,000 miles but drives fine once it is started.
Also the bulb seems to have blown behind the digital clock, can this be replaced, if so, how do i remove the clock.
Thanks for your help guys.:)

im no expert...but i think it should already have glow plugs in it

when you go to start it in morning...do you just put the key in and turn it straight away ? , there is a little light in top right corner of the dash that lights up when you put key in and turn it on (but not starting engine) thats the glow plug light...when that goes out you then start it up

I would renew the little leak off pipes between the injectors and check that the banjos are tight.
This could be the problem of fuel running back overnight.
Try priming the lift pump before starting in the morning, if it's then ok suspect leaky /split pipes.

I can replace the pipes, but what are banjos?
How do i prime the lift pump.
I forgot to mention that the revs on idle when i start it up are at about 600 then they raise to about 750 after a few minutes, does this need adjusting, if so, how do i do it?
Thnaks for the replies.

This could be caused by one or more faulty glow plugs. You could try giving it three or four goes before trying to start it. Turn ignition on, wait for glow plug light to go out, ignition off and repeat a couple of times then try to start it.

Remove the clock by sliding two old credit cards in the gaps at the top and bottom of the clock. This will release the catches and let you pull it out. There is a bulb in the back that you can replace, spares from Halfords or your local motor factor. Fitting the new bulb can be fiddly

Banjos are the connections (shaped like banjos) on the side of the injectors, it's not unknown for them to work loose (yours may have just little pipes to connect pipes to). Make sure the link pipes (leak off pipes) are in good order and not split or air will get in and allow the fuel to run back when engine stood.
Prime the lift pump by pumping the lever on the side to build up pressure at the injector pump, if it's floppy then turn the engine over a little and try again as it may be at the wrong place on the camshaft.
Give it about twenty pumps and see if it starts straight away.
There is a throttle stop / adjustable screw to raise and lower the tickover, do it when engine warm.

Mine has started like this lol. Mine is a 94 300tdi with 188000miles on her. Replaced the glowplugs still no good. Also my glowplug light doesn't work. To start mine foot on the clutch pedal, and these other flat down on the go go pedal. As soon as she fires, foot off both pedals. Rest of the day its fine. Only in the cold weather thou. Warmer weather no starting isusses at all.

Just a quick update guys;
I tried the options mentioned above but i can't seem to get any pressure in the lever to prime the fuel pump, i've tried turning engine and then trying again but still no pressure.
Also checked for any leaks around leak off pipes but still going to replace them anyway, so is there any other ideas as to why it struggles to start in a morning (apart from the battery).
I forund a leak i thought was diesel, but i think i've pin-pointed in to power steering fluid coming from the pipe where it connects to the bottom of the reservoir. Iwill tighten the jubilee clip and see if that sorts it.

I was hoping someone would say that, lol. Is there a set procedure to follow as i've never reall done anything like this. Thanks.
