Hi,

Ive just put a 300tdi engine in my 95 Discovery but I cant get it to turn over.

The black, brown and white connectors that go through the bulkhead into the cab are all plugged in. The fuses are all intact. The battery is charged and I can hear the starter motor click on the turn of the key, but the engine wont turn. I have replaced the starter motor with one that I know is working and that hasnt cured it. The engine is not seized and turns freely on the crank. All the earths appear solid......... I'm stumped.......

What else can I do?

So it appears that the starter motor isn’t cranking the engine, either the motor isn’t turning or isn’t engaging with the flywheel.

Run a new earth direct to crankcase from the battery, I went from the bolt that the original battery earth lead uses to the chassis directly using a braided cable to the can belts timing case.

Did you bench test the starter?

Have you disturbed any other connections?

This is a straight like for like swap. Its a manual too so there's no inhibitor switch getting in the way.

I haven't bench tested the starter motor but it came off the old engine which I was using daily so I know its good. The starter clicking is a new thing. It wasnt doing that at first, not until id turned the key in the ignition barrel a few times. Ill have a fiddle with the earths and get back to you. Cheers.

“All the earths appear solid” “have a fiddle with the earths” I think u will have to get more constructive and start testing instead of guessing. Voltages at the starter motor will be one test.

Just bench tested both starters and they are both knackered. The one that was fitted engages but doesnt spin...hence the click.... the one that came with the replacement engine doesnt do anything.

New one is on its way.

Well done lads.....
