I have done a search on this as I am sure at sometime in the past someone here posted a pick of a mounting arrangement they had made for their defender, however no ammount of searching has led me to it.

I am just getting sorted with regard to netbook, usb gps, memory map etc. I have an Asus eeepc901 netbook, ideal as its solid state and got a usb gps thing of ebay. I also bought myself a universal netbook car mount. I doubt the windscrren sucker will be suitable but thought I would be able to modify the rest of it, ie flexi shaft and mount.

A defender doesnt really seem to lend itself to laptop or netbook installation though, had half an hour in it this morning flying the netbook around the cab (truck) and pretty much everywhere seemed to be in the way, the only real place seemed to be on top of the cubby box lid.

So I thought I'd ask on here, there must be some of you with a good setup and or good mounting ideas, photo's would be great.

The pic below is a pic of the mount i bought, i was intending on taking the hacksaw to the suction cup and solid mounting the flexishaft. but havnt done anything with it yet.

Regards
Mark

I've got exactly the same bracket and it works a treat stuck to the screen. I'll try to post a picture. I found that I had to bend the stem back on itself in a swan-neck fashion to shorten the length and double it up for strength. I just bent it back on itself and used cable ties to keep it doubled up.

Have done 2000 miles + of green lanes and it's never let me down. Just make sure the screen is warm when you fit it and that the weight rests on the dash top predominantly. Been fine in my 90 and D4.

I also bought it to then modify, but found that it was totally up for the job with the 2 min cable-tie mid.

I just bought one of these for the same purpose and yes it fell off the windscreen twice and my Discovery 300tdi hadn't even moved off the driveway.

So feeling that the unit had actually lived up to the expectation of I bet that doesn't last long on there and for £14.99 what did I expect I was starting to also consider the modification and tweaking.

But after finding this thread I will try the warm windscreen tip.

Will try that tomorrow, thanks

Why do you people do this? It's dog ugly, and you can't see out the front! And that d4 has a satnav on the passenger side, and possibly one that came factory fitted! WHY????!!!

Simply because the satnav doesn't show lanes, and memory-map does, plus you can zoom in close so that you don't miss the gate entrance etc.

Maps!!!! Why not just navigate by the stars? Ever tried opening an OS map whilst driving a Defender with the roof off at 60mph on your own?

On a serious note, the justification in the D4 is that when that picture was taken was simple. The vehicle needed to cover 1100 miles with 100% accuracy in 24 hours. The factory Nav is good and ties in with TMS via RDS, however TomTom are usually more generous with reducing mileage and slightly more direct routes, plus a back-up nav was important should one have gone down and whilst one is rerouting. The reason for the MM is that it's not a Nav unit but tells you accurately where you are regardless as to whether you are on a public or private land (mine to 1:25000). It also gives you elevations and land features which was vital in that 24hrs. You can fully customise MM to show where you've been, leave notes about locations and email routes etc (overlays) to other people.

The reason for the 'ugly' screen mount is simple.... I have 4 cars, one of which gets changes twice yearly therefore I need something that I can transfer easily, and at less that £20 this has proved invaluable.

Quite happy to run through why I have a starter motor as opposed to a crank handle if needs be? Lol

Just refixed mine to a warm windscreen. Well worth trying before modifying btw.
Works a treat and takes some serious force to pull it off the window.

Nice one.
